4afe sputtering when cold
I just recently picked up a '92 Corolla DX wagon 5spd in a trade. There are a few things that need to be tended to on this car. The one I need help with is this sputtering problem. Whenever I drive the car from a cold start, it'll sputter like it's running out of gas while under light throttle. If I increase the throttle, and speed up, it stops. It doesn't matter what gear it's in, but the lower rpm's and the lower the throttle.... is worse. It gets so bad that the car starts jerking.
I have replaced the fuel filter, and it seemed to make the car worse. I have also run seafoam through the throttle body and the fuel tank. No changes.
Today I pulled the plugs and noticed they were not very tight. It also looked like exhaust was getting by the threads, because all the threads were covered in carbon. I think I'm gonna try replacing the plugs tomorrow.
From there I don't know. Any help is appreciated. The car has 240k miles + on it and runs great otherwise.
......Also, one other thing. I don't know if it's related..... but when cold, I can feel a loss of power about halfway through the rpm range. The car pulls.... then kinda lets off.... then pulls again. It doesn't do this all the time though. Gremlins?
