I
frequently check my tire pressure even with working transmitters. Every tire problem I've had (not too many thank goodness) have occured while I've been driving. Mostly picking up a nail or similar which resulted in a leak fast enough to not wait until my next check. Had I had an active tire pressure monitoring system it would have saved me changing a tire on short notice or in a dangerous location. I think TM included those for a good reason.
Personally I think these active transmitters are just being positioned so TM can introduce
run flat tires (where active monitoring is mandated by law) and scrap the spare. The additional trunk space especially in the HV and reduced cost of the spare tire assembly would be enormous.
