Most I've seen has a small box (like in the link you posted above) mounted to the windsheild just under the rear view mirror. The 06 BMW 3's have it intergrated in the back of the mirror.
Nowadays the auto dimming mirror is starting to filter down to avg. brand cars. But for the rain sense in the past, seemed to be an option included in only the higher model luxury cars. But I think now it's starting to show up more common in all luxury cars. I'm guessing it will probably be a few years still before we start seeing them throughout the Honda, Toyota etc. line.
BTW my 1996 STS had the rain sense wipers standard.
It's an option I miss since moving over to the SE.
