Early 4Runner model features

Hi all,

I feel a bit embarassed asking this question, but I just can't seem to pin down an answer.

I'm looking to buy an old 4Runner for off-roading and taking my family camping. i'm thinking probably first generation, possibly second gen. I want it cheap and for it to be ugly is kinda a plus as I won't have to worry if I slide into a tree or ding the body on a rock. Not that I'm looking for ugly, just that pretty is not a priority.

My main question is, what are the year-to-year differences? Like, what year did the second-generation come out? What year was the solid front axle offered? What year was fuel injection introduced? What other important differences? Motors?

I'd also like to hear about any problems that I should be looking for.

I'm not sure if y'all are really into off-roading, but any input there would be appreciated. If not, I figure I can find an off-road forum once I have a basis to ask questions from.

Of course, it might just be easiest to link me to a site with this info - I've just had a hard time finding one.

Thanks a bunch,

Chris
