Running rough @ WOT

Hi guys, new to the forum.
OK, so all has been fine with the Celica for a few years now.
94 Celica GT 5 speed 2.2L 145XXX miles

Mods: Aftermarket intake installed about 1-2 months ago

New spark plugs installed 5-6 months ago

I can start the engine and it will run fine @ idle. (doesn't mis) If I give it gas it "coughs" and acts as though it's going to die.. If I slowly open the throttle it will rev to redline just fine, No problems at all. I have to be very gentle on the gas, anymore than 1/3 of the throttle @ idle or 1/2 throttle above 3000 rpms and the engine coughs.
I also notice hearing a sucking noise when goosing the throttle plate. I don't think it's a vacuum leak, just the intake sucking air in. I think this is normal.
Now, If I remove the intake and goose the throttle to near WOT while it "coughs" a puff of white smoke will come out of the intake. My first thought when I saw this was a faulty intake valve, but I don't really think it's mechanical becuase it doesn't mis except when it "coughs." I'm wondering if the fuel system isn't dumping in to much fuel for some reason?? Is this normal with our celicas? Is there a common problem I should start with?? If it's not fuel related what else could cause the problem?? Thank in advance for your responses.
