For the money you're talking about, scrap the subs and replace front and back speakers and add an amp. I recently upgraded front and rear speakers and added an amp for not much more than you want to spend. Here's what I got:
6.5" Ultra Linear for front mids $40.00 - Not the best but they'll do the job for now
6x9 Audiobahn ASQ96 or something like that. About $55.00 from Ebay store w/shipping. These are a discontinued model but they seem to handle enough bass.
Alpine MRV- F340 Amp - 35Wx4 RMS at 12.5V for $137.00 in an Ebay auction. It was slightly used but a total deal in terms of quality and savings off retail.
If you throw in an extra $120 you could upgrade the stock stero with an Alpine 9856 or Clarion DXZ555MP or newer model.
