Lightbulb Road Trips

So I would like everyone to take part in this.

"Would" or "Do" you take your daily car on road trips? i.e the corolla? Were talking a 400+ KM Trip or would you rent a $34 a day vehicle that's larger and possibly more comfortable?

I think it depends really. For me I'll take my Corolla any chance I get. However if its going to be a bunch of friends, like 5 or 6 sometimes a rental might suit that purpose a little better.

Its fun going on a roadtrip with a few cars, cruising down the highway. But its also fun to have a bunch of friends in the car doing the usual shenanigans.

I'd take the Corolla unless you're taking more than 4 people (including you) for anywhere further than 1 day's travel. I figure the Corolla is meant for that - it's reliable and comfortable plus gets great gas mileage. If you're loading up for a long weekend with lots of baggage and people a fair ways away, you may want to rent a van or something. I frequently drove to/from college which was ~6 hours driving and was plenty comfortable. But, 3 in the back seat gets cramped quickly.

If the Corolla had mods, like suspension, wheels, stereo maybe, just some stuff to make it fun, then I'd totally be taking it! That IS what the car is for... and road trips are the BEST!

I would not go on a road trip in a Corolla unless forced.

I think they are perfectly fine and dependable cars... just too small and noisy to travel in if I had a choice.

Like I said, it would have to be modified. But My thought is that if the car is not good for a road trip, it is not good to own or daily drive. Granted, I was thinking of my IS300 when I voted "Take the Corolla"

I've taken my 09 Corolla on many road trips of several thousand miles. My longest road trip was 4k miles from Washington to New Mexico & back. My Corolla is a blast to drive. It's quiet, comfortable and very fun to drive. Why would you own it if you didn't like it?

To me it would be a waste of money to rent a car. If you pay $34/day many people add the insurance to protect them & then the car may not even be a fun car to drive. As others have said, unless you need more room then enjoy your Corolla, if I need more room then I just use my Previa.

The 10th gen Corolla is not very small at all. It has as much room as an older Camry did & mine isn't noisy at all. If you ask 10th gen owners we like our Corollas & I would guess that most of us wouldn't hesitate to enjoy it at all on a road trip.

I'm taking mine to Alaska next summer on a 6k mile journey & I can't wait!

Depends on where I am going. Anything five+ hrs away I will rent. I just got back from a 16 hr round trip to Poland and we rented a golf tdi. Saved us a lot on fuel cost...especially when I drive 130-140 km/h. The corolla just revs too high compared to a diesel...plus that 6th gear help a lot too.

I would just drive the corolla. Even here in Tx gas is not bad compared to other places but I would just save money and drive my car I own already and pay for already. Here in Tx things are far away so 400 km is nothing to us. Heck I did 200 miles(321km) just last night. My car was more than comfortable...that is unless you are carrying 4 other people with you....then I would rent

Renting a car will never cost less than the fuel savings. The Golf Tdi may get a little better mpg but not by much, maybe 10 mpg at best. Just the rental cost will be much more then that! The Corolla gets great mpg & even at high speeds it cruises along just fine at 80-85 mph. I've traveled at 85 mph when the speed limit was 80 mph on the interstate & the Corolla did great & was not overly noisy at all.

I did a roadtrip from Vancouver BC, to Calgary AB, up to Edmonton and then back down to Vancouver. All in all, the distance was about 2500km. Imo it did perfectly fine on a long distance roadtrip.

Is it the best car for a roadtrip out there? Probably not, plenty of larger stuff if you want space, plenty of faster stuff if you want speed etc....

However, is it more than adequate? Definitely.

I say take it and drive it to the ground. I bought my 2009 brand new and now have 113000km which is about 70k miles.

This car has been on roadtrips from Edmonton to Vancouver and to Saskatchewan. I would easily drive it 1000km + any day. It is just a nice and quiet car and very light on the road and great on gas when you are doing 160km/h haha.

And If I would rent a car, I would only rent something powerful like this.
I took my girl to Jasper which is about 400km away and I wanted to have a bit of fun.
So I picked this up for 4 days.
SOOOOOO MUCH FUN!!!

Talked the Owner into letting me have it for 4 days (Family friend)
You can't image how much fun it is to ahve a V12 turbo under your feet with AWD and on wide highway and mountain roads.
