The new XRS is basically a 4 door tc that weighs 300lbsish less, although the chassis is probably better in terms of body roll. I'd still get one if I was able to, it may not be comparable to the old XRS but it is sure a nice car.

Actually the new Corolla XRS will have the same weight (possibly more) than that of the Scion TC. The specs are up on the new Corolla website.

I'd go with the Corolla, it's basically a 4dr tC.

From what I can see in the NCF manual for the tC and Corolla XRS, they are within 15 pounds of each other when similarly equipped.

Well, do you prefer a 2-door or 4-door? The Corolla will probably give you a smoother overall ride. The standard sun/roof on the tC slides to the outside when open, and has the glass back area. The Corolla will have a more traditional sunroof. Both offer sismilar upgrades for sound, though I believe the bluetooth is not available on the tC.

OH, I did notice one difference that may be important. The AUTOMATIC tranny on the Corolla 2.4l is a 5-speed, versus the 4-speed on the tC.

I saw the 09 Corolla today at the autoshow and needless to say, I was quite impressed with the car.

I think they are making a mistake not putting the 2.4 on the XLE as well. XRS shouldn't be the only one.

2.4

Dont forget that 1.8 isnt too shabby with it's dual VVT-I, the Matrix has a lot to offer with a new AWD active torque control system. Another cool feature is that the power steering system is fully electronic. with a 12 volt or a 35 volt system.

I'd rather have the 1.8 litre. It's a lot more fuel efficient.

I think the Matrix AWD should be a much better seller now that it has some power.

Is the purpose of electric steering to reduce fuel consumption by not having to run the pump continuously? And by electric does that mean mechanical steering with electric assist or purely electrical system?

It is mechanical with electrical assist via a worm gear on the steering column. The RAV4, Corolla, Matrix, and Yaris (to name a few) all use the electrical-type now.

I think the main advantage is the lack of power robbing when it is not needed, plus even when it is used it is a much more direct form of assist, versus the energy conversions when using a hydraulic-type setup. The other advantage is more precise control of how much assist is provided and when using computer control.

Must save a lot of weight and clean up the engine compartment too. No hoses, pump or resevoir.
