The 2.4l engine may have less HP then the old 1.8l the XRS shared with the Celica - but - it has more torque and is going to carry the car better. In addition, you now have all the 2.4l performance enhancements available if you want them. IMHO, the 1.8l engine was not all that great, even at the higher HP. What is intersting is they also added the automatic tranny to the lineup for the XRS Corolla.
The new 2AZ XRS needs atleast FI (supercharger or turbo) to match or beat the old XRS in N/A form. A N/A 200 WHP 2ZZ XRS with bolt-ons and full tune is another thing. Now, the Greddy supercharged 2ZZ 220 WHP would be a different story. Pounds for pounds, the older XRS put power to the wheels on dynos what the 2AZ XRS does to the crank (yes, it was underrated for some reason by Toyota). Gearing and broader power curve is another story. Not to mention a few hundred pounds lighter. Revving up to 8400 rpm in every gear is priceless.
However, I do agree with you that the new 2AZ XRS with better low end torque and with an available automatic transmission will be more city driving friendly not unlike Mazda 3 2.3 or Lancer GTS. But, the 2ZZ-GE was far more of a driver's car.

Agreed. I think if the option was between the 2AZ or the 2ZZ in the new body style, I would choose 2ZZ. That being said, I think I'd prefer the 2AZ in the 09+ than a 2ZZ in the Gen 9.
But, choices are made based on all sorts of things, so I'm sure people will make theirs, Toyota has chosen what to offer this time around.

but thats the thing man, i dont wanna pay 20000 for the new xrs then have to add anothe few thousands for mods you know...i guess the only good thing is that the new one takes regular fuel....but hey gas prices suck anyway...

I agree. Stock for stock, I like the styling of the new 2009 XRS more than my own XRS.

We all know that the last Corolla XRS was used as a dumping ground for the 2ZZ's Toyota had left over from the defunct Celica GT-S and Matrix XRS.

Some people actually do prefer the simplistic drivability that a relatively torquey car can offer.

Reason: my man, there was no street racing implications :)
Some people fail to realize torque is what moves mass. HP is good but if you don't have good torque, especially in the right places, you're going to have to WAIT until the Rs get up to where those HP #s can be taken advantage of UNLESS you're the type of person keeps his Rs over 5k all the time. Moral of the story, don't get hung up on #s.
