Ok, I know I should have just done this myself. I have 2500 miles on my corolla. I wanted to dump the oil before going to Indy this weekend.
I took the car to the dealer with a oil change coupon I downloaded online right from the dealers web site.. Coupon was for up to 5 qts of oil and filter.
Got the oil change, guy comes to me afterwards says, we had to charge you 33.00 dollers because your car calls for the new 5w20 "Special" oil. I asked what this special brand was, Mobil he replied, semi synthetic. He said I can go to full synthetic after 5000 miles, allow for break in. I said, well I won't be back, the old bait and switch, I said you could have told me this before you changed it, I would have just done it myself. I said, its not special oil, you can find 5w20 at walmart for the same price if not cheaper the 5w30. He said I could use 5w30 in the future and it will not void warrenty. I said thanks..
Next time, I will buy filter from dealer. But a jug of 0w30 mobil 1 and do it myself for about 28 to 30 dollers.
Then, to top it off, they charged my for 5 qts of oil, car calls for 4.5. where is the other 1/2 qt I paid for? yeah, dealer kept it.
Frankly there is not that much different in a 5w30 versus 5w20. The manufacture would have to prove that the 5w30 caused an oil related failure, impossible to do so. I didn't say I wasn't going to use the 5w20. But it is the same engine from a year ago or two years ago, and that calls for 5w30. It is all about CAFE regulations and fuel milage. ANd the increase of a 5w20 versus 5w30 is minute.
I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experiance with any dealer, had it been mine we would have given you the coupon price and educated you about the next visit. The coupon price was likely based off the 5-30 conventional oil pricing, while i know in the market place you can find 5-20 for the same price on 5-30 on the shelf, the 5-20 offered through Toyota to the dealers does cost more than the 5-30. I do not understand their break in theory about synthetic though since the car was filled at the factory with the 0-20 full synthetic. What ever you decide to do in the future I am glad to hear that you plan on using the factory filter, there is a differance in design. The field technical specialists in my area still tell me that they prefer to see 0-20 in the cars no matter where you live but the only differance you may see is in fuel mileage.
I wish I would have been in your dealership.. It was not that big of a deal, maybe 8or 9 bucks. But you are right, should have told me before hand. Or I like your idea.
Thank you very much.
I guess I shouldnt put all dealers in the same venue.
So for the record, since the dealerships are using 5w30 or 0w30 in these cars, for the record, can this void the warrenty or damage the engine, I say no. What is the offical opinion. I know, the factory can say anything to void a warrent. On the Amsoil site, they say the viscosity of a 0w30 or 5w30 will not void a warrenty. Heck, look at all the additives people put in the gas tanks or engine, Even those say they will not void warrenty

hold on a minute, Factory Fill is 0-20w Full Synthetic? are you sure? if that's true then I'm gonna have to rethink my oil change strategy I've been planning for the past several hundred miles.....
The likelyhood of your engine being damaged running a 30w weight oil is slim, the likely event would be if you ran that oil and then complained of a hard start, cold start of fuel mileage issues they would request that you run the specified oil first before those concerns were addressed

That is what I was told, i also reccomend going the full 5k before servicing, there is no reason not to.
I currently have about 1800 on her on the Factory Fill. The oil change sticker on my windshield came from the dealer with next oil change 3000 written on it. I'll likely go to 5k OCI after that.
Well, my dealer also put 3000 mile change stickers on my car. Maual calls for 5,,000, And if I am running a full synthetic I have NO PROBLEM going at least 5,000 miles.

Agreed. But why if the Factory fill and manual recommends 0w20, why is that dealer charging you extra and using 5w20 semi synthetic when for about the same price you can use 0w20?
Regarding them charging you for a full 5 qt, I think that is just
par for the course, but hey they could have at least given you the spare 1/2 qt in a bottle or jug so that you can use it for top ups!

The 0-20 is more than the 5-20 the list price for 0-20 is 7.76 per quart
