Got a question

Just got an 09 corolla S. Can I add any parts to it that will help my mpg? I'm getting great mpg now, just wanted to know if I can increase it.

I think by adding either a cold-air or short-ram intake may increase mileage...

Also, don't get those gadgets from eBay that claim to increase your MPG...

According to my mechanic at 10,000 miles switch to synthetic oil. Less resistance at the engine. Any thoughts on this?

Go Synthetic

I have always used synthetics, after about 2000 miles I switched over to Pennzoil Platiunum. You will see an increase. You do not need to wait till 10,000 miles, you can do it immediatly, but I waited a few miles just because it made me feel better to do so. The logic is seating the rings with regular oil. But it will not take that long to seat the rings.

I have used mobil 1 in the past. But with the price of pennzoil synthetic being lower, and I have read great results from used oil annls I made the switch to pennz. to tryi it out.

What are you seeing as far as increased mileage? I am going to do the switch, maybe I will do it sooner then 10,000. It will take me 9 months to put 10grand on my car, I would like to switch sooner if the mileage gain is significant.

mpg increase

I know some people would not agree with this, but I saw a 2-3 mpg increase using the 5w20 penn synthetic. If you drop the air pressure under 30 which I tried I lost a couple mpg.. so keep air 30 or abolve. Max on sidewall of tire is like 40 or so.. I just can't make it above 33 just to hard of a ride

THanks! That's a significant increase. I am supposed to take it in at 3000, I will ask for Penn at my change.

You might

You might want to just run to walmart and pick up a 5qt jug of synthetic, its like 21 bucks or so. The dealer will charge you quite a bit more for synthetic. Im not saying just pennzoil, although that is what I went to this time around. You could buy the Mobil 1 also.

I ran into problems at the dealer on my last change. Charged me more for that oh soooo special 5w20 oil. Don't let them do that to ya. All it is is mobil semi synthetic.. I think the mobil 5000 oil.

Not worth the money. I just didnt feel like dealing with the filter the last time, but I will most likely change it myself on the next oil change. Good luck!

PS.. I don't know what your dealer will do, but mine put a sticker on the windshield for 3000 oil change. Manual says 5000 miles. If your using synthetic you will have NO problem going 5000 miles on that oil.

If you live in a state that promotes E10 (10% ethanol) oxygenated gas, find a gas station that sells 100% unleaded. I believe that the Prius utilizes low rolling resistance tires. If there's a size that will fit the Corolla, it may be worth considering when the factory rubber wears out.
