Tech Tip 2286: Downshift Sensation When Coming to a Stop

Thought I'd post this up here, since some people may be interested to read it. It applies to the 2009 Corolla and Matrix 2.4L models with the automatic transmission and gives some insight into what you may be feeling when slowing down.

Jeff, thanks for showing us the Tech Tips. However in that document it says that no repair is required but at the top it states the condition is due to a faulty transaxle

No, it wasn't, although there may be some of similar nature on TIS.

No, at the top it says that people may think it is a fault of the transaxle, but it isn't, and this is the explanation of what is actually happening.

Eric, you've misinterpreted the Tech Tip. It says that this clunk "may be [MIS]interpreted as a fault of the transaxle." If you read the cause, its really the ECU programming.

I've spoken with some techs after they had one of these on the dyno and found the problem...they've indicated this condition does not cause damage to anything. That said, perhaps it can be corrected with an ECU update to flatten the fuel cut so it's not so dramatic. Perhaps it doesn't need to be (or shouldn't) since it' seems to be protecting the PWC. Time will tell...

This is (sort of) good news that there's no damage being done - although my car hasn't started displaying this (yet).

Good to know... Is it still an ECU issue? And why has it stopped recently when i've been doing that "teaching" technique that TC suggested?

I don't think it's really and issue - rather it's the ECU doing it to protect other parts (ie: doing it's job). Perhaps you've "trained" the ECU well.

Next stop. Skynet.
