The Toyota break-in period is a little longer than most. Honda/Acura for example recommends 600 miles, opposed to the 1000 miles recommended by Toyota. Then again, Honda/Acura uses additives to help accelerate the break-in process, whereas Toyota's factory fill is regular engine oil.

Driving at the speed limit is fine, but the key is to vary engine speed (RPM) and load (throttle position). If you have an automatic, drop down to 60 or 70 once in a while, throw it into 3rd gear, and accelerate back to 80. If you have an M/T, do the same thing in 4th gear.

You can do things differently but the idea is to prevent long periods with the engine spinning at the same RPM.

As far as WOT goes, I err to the side of caution and wait until the first oil change.

it's an auto. i figure by the time we are leaving it should have somewhere around 800. so i guess i treat it nice for the first couple of hundred. didn't get one with cruise. big mistake for such a long trip. never thought it would be used for out of town driving. would take one of our other vehicles if gas wasn't so expensive. hindsight should have spent more money and got a few more options. called the guy from the dealership to see if cruise control could be added and he told me no. can't figure that one out. looks the same as the one on my wifes 4runner.

thanks

My salesman is so weird..duriong the test drive he made me accelerate as fast as 80 mph..just to try on the speed.. i just found out that in the first few miles you shouldn't do this..the car that i test drove was the one i bought..do you think that test drive to 80 harmed my car?

Hope not. I had mine doing the same speed in km's before I got home with it. It now has over 4500km and hasn't touched oil yet and is really good on gas. The way these engines are made I don't think it makes much difference.

Where does Toyota mention the break-in period of 1,000 miles? I don't see that anywhere in my owner's manual and my salesman and the service manager at my dealer both told me there is no recommended break-in period from Toyota. It's just something they make up...yours told you 1,000 miles, I'm sure someone else's said 1,500, etc, etc.

My salesman said to change the oil after 6000km and it is useless to change it after 1k or 3k km.

Vehicle speed is completely irrelevant. It's the engine speed and load (rate of acceleration, etc) that's important.

Since when does anyone listen to their salesman? It's as clear as day on the bottom of page 114

Wind it up and post how you think it ran. I've hit 75-80 and it's smooth as silk (LE w/ auto). I'm at 5000 miles in about 2 months.

A lot of people will tell you that break in periods are a myth, I think as long as you're not stepping on it at every red light and red lining the motor, you're ok. I don't see why driving the car on the highway at normal speeds will damage the motor.

the car ran great. smooth,no rattles, and no problems with the eps drifting the car. we figured that we saved close to 300 in fuel alone not taking my pickup. we made a few more stops than usual just to stretch and this would be our only complaint.
