It's 'sound resistant material'. In this case the material suspiciously resembles black styrofoam.

It's nothing to be surprised about, really. It's just the way these newer cars are designed, especially Japanese cars. It doesn't mean they skimp on actual building materials.

yea i knew about that its actually used as a sound barrier or asorber its better then the older cars used to not have them i believe as least my 03 echo doesn't. I have the sound sealant package so i am thinking thats the reason it is in there

they use the styrofoam thing in the vibe too...it's used to block out noise to give the car a more quieter ride. buick uses similar things in their doors and stuff too.

is this what you see?

On older cars it was typically just a thin piece of plastic like a fender liner. It is now a more dense styrofoam, which helps prevent road noise.

What's the problem? LOL.

I think styrofoam helps during impact more than sound resistance? I think a actual sound deadening pad would be leaps and bounds better than the foam. Remember, the inside of bumpers are made to foam too to absorb impact.

Yeah that is also true. It helps prevent side impacts from just pushing into the A-pillar.
