Parking break

I have a question. My wife isn't used to using a parking break but with our new Corolla, we are using it to just get everything broke in. Since she isn't used to it, she started to drive with it on. She saw "brake" flashing on the dash and disengaged it after about 40 feet. She said there was no difference in the feeling so I'm wondering if it disengaged or if she just put a lot of wear and tear on the brake pads?

USA Parking Brake

I will use it all the the time, but my wife is the primary driver she does not remember to disengage it, so I never use it to avoid a repair bill, but what am I too say, on our 05 I drove it approx 25 miles with the parking brake ON, and I could tell that I did due to I could smell the overheated brakes, so far at 88K still no replacement on the rears.

What does an over heated brakes smell like? Is it like a burnt rubber/tire smell? I'm kinda worried because I sometimes smell a scent of burnt rubber in my Corolla as soon as I step out of the car after driving..

In terms of driving with the hand brakes on, does your rolla produce a beeping sound if the handbrakes are not released?i think it's standard for all rollas to sound a beep if anything needs attention at all.. It's coz sometimes I also forget to release the handbrakes and before I zoom around (i got used to driving cars with no hand brakes too) then that beep sounds and then I realized my parking brake light is still on..the beep helps me a lot...

Have you ever been next to a semi going down a steep hiil, when they do some drivers ride the brakes abit to slow them down, they can't due this forever because it will overheat the brakes, causing them to not work and there is a smell, kinda of hard to describe cross between hot metal due to it being very hot, and a oil smell, hope the reply works, I have smelled overheated brakes many times from the semis, And the smell is not from a tire, have you ever stepped on the brakes hard causing skid, or when you get a flat tire while driving at a good speed, when this happens there will be a burnt tire smell.when I left my parking brake on it was on my 05 this yr did not beep but my 09 does. And that has already been tested with my wife when she asked what the beeping noise was.

Even my 08 Accord has the alert beep letting me know.

Not to worry, there are no dumb questions, just inquiries for info, always ask and someone will answer and or provide a source of help for you, and driving 40ft with the parking brake has no long lasting effects, just give off some smell. Also with drum brakes (rear) it is best to keep them applied (when parked) this will keep the brake pads tighter and helps last longer etc.

I have 87K on my 05 still working, they will have to be replaced this yr. I had 84K on my 04 CRV and they still had more then half left on them. This was my trade for the 09 XRS

Thanks for all the help. I was almost sure it wouldn't hurt anything since the top speed would have been 10mph.

I've been told you shouldn't use the parking break unless on a steep hill but now some of you say to use it and of course the manual says to use it all times when parking. If the boss lady is going to forget,

It's no worse than pushing the brake pedal for 40ft, you do that every day. No worries.

It also says you're not supposed to use it in the winter. It doesn't make sense to use it for half the year then stop when the weather turns cold.

In extreme winter the parking brake cable may iced up and not release.

You should always use the parking brake. Its primary purpose afterall, is to hold the vehicle stationary when not in use (hence the name). You don't want the transmission to be loaded with the vehicle's weight

The primary reason not to use it during the winter months is to prevent the pads from freezing onto the rotors, or the shoes freezing onto the drums. It's easier to use wheel chocks than to defrost your parking brake system
