Terrible noise

When driving with my windows down (primarily the rear windows) on the highway, I get terrible wind vibration noise that kills my ear drums. I have also experience this wih my front windows down but not as much. This happens on 'open highways' (401) as well as highways that are surrounded by sound barrier walls (QEW). Just to note, I do not have wind deflector.

Has anyone experienced this or know any cures??

Also, when driving on city streets with the windows down I here a clicking noise, I thought I read somewhere that it is the ABS engaging and should stop after driving for a bit, but I have it almost all the time. Although, I can only here it on slower/quieter streets.

A Law of physics is the cause... The wind coming in creates sound waves (like blowing air over top of a beer bottle). And unfortunately that frequency which the sound waves are being produced is a terribly annoying and low frequency @ really high DBs Which is a TON of pressure on the ear drums. Not 100% on this, but that frequency could also be the vehicles natural frequency. Solution, Dont have the rear windows down ALL the way, or if you do, have the moonroof open, or one of the front windows open a crack to prevent the the sound waves from resonating.

I too have experienced it. And I have never had it that bad in another car.

I nderstand the physics of it all. Even with the other windows (or sunroof)cracked the noise is still there, just not as noticable. Is this a huge design flaw??

Most cars do this...physics - not a design flaw

check your tires for any rocks stuck in the tread or maybe even a nail - these could cause the clicking noise.

your best bet is to have your dealer drive your car at same speeds with same windows rolled down and let them solve the problem if it is "really" a problem in either the design or some legitimate trouble that is popping up.

I've experience this problem on many previously owned vehicles (not only Toyota's). I guess that the vents located at the lower corners of the rear quarter panel cannot exhaust the volume of air entering the interior with the windows down. Therefore, you get the buffeting from the air pressure that has now built-up in the car. If you close the window to a point where the vent can handle the amount of air entering, the sound will diminish.
