Just got approved today for a new 2009 Auto S w/moon roof pkg! I've spent the past week reading reviews and narrowing my selection on what to buy. Even had a few test drives (DBW feels different, not a bad thing entirely).
But here's my Question(s)...
Any advice on the throw in options such as rust proofing or extended service packages? Are they worth it (or just another way to make a few grand off me)
Also, from anyone's experience has there been any options such as satellite radio/ipod connectors that can be haggled over(anything would be good!!). I know I could be stretching it, but if at all possible I want to get the best bang for my buck.
My case I only bought the additional insurance for "new car replacement". The rest really depends on how long you intend to keep the car and amount of driving you do per year. With Toyota's great resale value you can sell and get a good price if your car turns out to be a lemon.
rust proofing - I always say no.. but then again, we don't use salt as liberally as other cities in Canada. Plus there is the corrosion perforation warranty (but it has to create a hole, not just surface rust). Plus I keep the underside of my cars as clean as I possibly can.
ext'd warranty - this one is up to you, really. If you intend to keep your vehicle for more than 4 or 5 years, it might be worth it esp. since things tend to go wrong just out of the basic warranty period (like our Camry's A/C which went bust just before the warranty ended but finally got fixed after the warranty ended).
iPod connector - there are plenty of good quality connectors for less than what Toyota charges and can be the cheaper option if you're good with your hands and can install it yourself. Most of Toyota's accessories have installation included so if it's something simple enough, then I usually install it myself.
In terms of accessories, the most common freebies that are thrown in are: all-weather mats, cargo net, mudguards and wheel locks so see if you can get any one of those (or more!) thrown in for you.

It's exciting! This will be my first brand new car as well as my first Toyota (My Mitsu just recently met up with a red light running chevy van, the van won and the OPP gave them a ticket for their effort)
Ironically Toyota was at the bottom of my list, and i only visited the dealership while waiting for my appointment with Subaru. After factoring in cost/reliability and gas mileage, and the fact that i fell for it after a test drive, The Corolla came out on top!!
They're tinting the windows for me so far, with alpine white exterior it's gonna look sweet!
i approved the underbody rustproofing because the streets in canada are being sprinkled with salt in winter.
i had chemical rust inhibitor, the surface rust perforation, the acid rain paint sealant, the frabric protector. i also got the 7 year ECP from toyota. and i am happy with everything i got. 5 years from now if in case i dont like the car anymore i will still be selling a corolla with 2 years of ECP remaining which any 2nd owner would be happy to get.
Any advice on the throw in options such as rust proofing or extended service packages? Are they worth it (or just another way to make a few grand off me)thx in advance!
Consumers Reports says that most of them are not worth the money and on a Toyota you don't really need them. On my 2001 Corolla, which I traded in on a 2009, no rustproofing and yet no rust spots - the body still looked as good as new in spite of salt on the highways (I live in Ontario). Also during that time no repairs that would have been covered under an extended warrantee. On my recent purchase I declined all the options based on past experience with Toyota.
I agree, my 1997 Corolla that I just sold to buy my 2009 had 239k miles on it and the only repair that would've been covered by extended warranty was a drivers side seat belt replacement at about 180k. As a matter of fact that was the only repair period other than standard maintenance items... I declined all the options on my recent purchase as well.
remember most newer cars use galvanized steel.........doesn't exactly rust easily. And, if you keep it clean there won't be a lot of issues with that anyway. You can always go down to A parts store and buy the 3M rubberized undercoating for a few bucks a can and do any crucial areas yourself if your confident in your abilities.
As for ESP....how do they work with your dealer? They one I went to offers a full refund, or partial refund for the amount of warranty that went unused. Example: You pay 2700 for the warranty, but only use it to fix 400 worth of repairs before it expires.....you get the 2300 difference back. Not sure how they'd make money on that(I guess from repair discounts and the 100 deductible, but still they wouldn't make too much), but whatever, its the plan I got.
I skipped all of that extra junk that they try to sell you. This is my sixth new car and have not had any problems in spite of not buying the extras.
Save your money.
BTW the satelite radio is another rip off. Satelite ready doesn't mean it has satelite. I wanted it so I checked with my dealer and it would cost me $600.00 to buy the parts and have it installed. You can get the parts for about 250.00 and install it yourself. It would take about 15 minutes.
I chose to buy a brand new satelite radio (XM) W/car kit for $8.36 including shipping on Ebay. It took about 5 min to install and plugs into the aux outlet.
Sounds great.
If you realy want to spend your money on something worth while replace your front speakers in the door. I replaced mine with some 4 way Sony speakers and it was the best thing that I could have done.
The electrical rust proof is absolutely useless. For that mount of money, I can spray my car annually for 6 years. Krown is one of the good spray protection providers.
i paid 24100 without the custom leather and that inclued sunroof, hood deflector and rubber mats. the leather cost me another 2k i am crazy but it looks nice with leather i hate cloth.
With Sirius running at $662.25 and XM at $477 it hardly seems worth it. Also the NAV systems running at 1733.50... wow. Seems overpriced (not that i wanted one anyways).
if you want an all around nav system check out the kenwood dnx8120. the reviews and user comments say that as of this time it is the ultimate double din HU. plus it is iphone compatible. (grins)
