i am not a race car driver nor do i know the techniques of racing a car properly. could anyone tell us here how do you correctly depress the gas pedal when trying to calculate time to get from 0 to 6 or 0 to 100? do you depress the gas pedal at once all the way down?
Everyone complains about how the car handles on turns my car handles great I don't know what people complain. And about for power I think our cars are pertty quick. Don't get me wrong but I think we have thease cars our self because we like them bottom line.
For an auto, from a stop hold the brake and pump the throttle at the same time. Push your revs to around 2500 ~ 3000 rpm, then let go of the brake. It may be different from car to car, but the trick is to make your tires screech just a little when you launch. After that, just floor it.
Wow, the way it sounds, Toyota must have destroyed the 09 Corolla. I had an 05 Corolla CE, and it handled very well, (after I dumped the cheap stock tires). It also ran quite strong for a 1.8 auto. I also had an 06 Matrix XRS, and that car handled even better than the Corolla, and of course it was a lot faster. I now have an 08 Scion xD as my econo-car. I'm impressed with it too. It handles quite good, (no Miata beater, but fun). It also accellerates as good as my old 05 Corolla did. I guess Toyota must have destroyed the 09 Corolla the way you folks are writing. I need to test drive one of the new Corollas to see how bad they really are.

I wouldn't listen to most of the posts... People always look for something to complain about. And really, if you are buying a low budget car & you are concerned about handling, then WHY DID YOU BUY THE COROLLA after test driving it. If you test drove all of those other models that "handle better", why did you buy the corolla if it is so bad? I honestly think these people either didn't test drive the car first (and they got what they deserved), or they are just looking for something to complain about since the car is SOOO good. OR!!!! they just read an article or watched that Youtube video that compared the Civic / Mazda3 / Corolla...
Silly consumers... Why complain about a car that you just got? Or complain about a car you dont own.
(This is more directed towards all the complainers, not you Georgenfla)

The new Corolla handles better than prior gen due to
1) Wider track
2) Wider Tire
3) Toyota retune for better handling
Honestly depends what car you are comparing, say if you use to drive a sport coupe like (Z, S2000, 3series) certainly the XRS is no performer. But still, i found the body roll is minimal even at moderate speed on base model (better than many cars like older camry gen5,4,etc). Maybe i am used to drive poor handling cars and mini-van...lol...
Funny thing is, I'd probably trade my car in for an XRS, I'm getting an oil change for my car on Saturday, I think I'll ask for a test drive on an XRS.
Just invest another $20,000 you'll get superbe handling, rear wheel drive, 4 wheel disc, powerful engine. It's the BMW 1 or 3 serious. But it'll only run on 94 octane with so-so fuel mileage. Oh yes. Higher insurance rates too..

Only good for half the life span, and lower resale % too
I'm not really a driving enthusiast but I did freeway test drive the civic si, the 323 touring and the imprezza (all had manuals, all tests in Edmonton) prior to testing and then purchasing an automatic '09 corolla xrs. I was in a bit of a negative frame of mind when I test drove the xrs, given the negative comments in the road & track/car & driver reviews, but my attitude changed when I drove the car. I would ask anyone :
1. There is no other automatic compact that I've driven that has the torque of the xrs and especially the full range of low to high end torque that is readily available throughout the entire range of operating the vehicle. Nothing I have ever read makes reference to this. Maybe this insn't important to anyone else who drives a compact car, but it's important to me. My idea of fun after the novelty wears off isn't constantly shifting gears at 6000 rpm.
2. There is a very low degree of front drive lateral torque pull in highway passing speed acceleration in this car. What a bonus in a front drive car!
3. I've had the car to 210 km/hr. once (likely will never do that again, just curious to see how fast it would go) & just did a 300 km trip at 130 very stable/comfortable km/hr average, Has anyone who critisizes this car actually driven it?
4. I live in Yellowknife NWT. Nothing compares to any form of Toyota when it comes to extreme cold weather starting & engine operating performance. Guaranteed driving misery at -40 with a 6 speed or turbo up here. Same must be true to a lesser degree for Edmonton or Saskatoon or for that matter, Canada in the winter.
5. The sight lines whie driving are excellent. Not so for the competition.
6. With all the airbags, 5 speed auto, traction/stabilty control, 160 hp, 4 wheel discs, 45 series tires, remote start and so on, the car is too expensive at $27K (AB & NWT list inc fed. GST)? I don't think so. Usually for $27K you get a piece of crap when it comes to an automobile. The XRS is no piece of crap.
7. I've got 4K on the odo now and not a single rattle, sqeak or problem to report.
But what do I know, I'm just a regular person who drives a car, fast sometimes when I want to have fun and the law's not sight, but always with respect for the safety of others.
P.S. when the make this car with independent rear suspension (2010?) I'm going to buy another one.

It won't get independent; what so bad about semi-indepdendent? I have driven many variety combination suspension vehicles (strut, wish-bones, multi-link, leaf, torison). Honestly unless you make a turn at high speed, the difference is not that significant. Get a front strut, thinker front and rear sway bars for better handling. If XRS get higher load rating suspension (harder and stiffer), people will then complaint the ride is too harsh...

i never had the chance to test drive any model of the 09 corolla because richmond auto mall only had 1 unit on display when i signed up the documents. the moment the next 09 corolla went out of production the dealer called me up at once to bring it home. but i just love my new 09 corolla S auto.

I mean no offense but you talk funny..LOL
That was a little difficult to parse.
too make all of us feel better and some may call me stupid, but i already broken in my car (09 corolla le w cruise keyless) so it a little heavier, but i beat my friends Honda fit man and two Honda civic hatches w/ catback and intakes. so the corolla is pretty fast in it's class and it has a great turning radius, but yes their is a lot of roll (to get rid of that use lowering spring and strut bar)
