If you don't know much about cars, I suggest you follow the maintenance plan outlined in the manual.

Check oil, and other fluid levels as well as tire pressure once a week.

Other than that clean inside and out when its dirty.

Depending how you drive it can stay mint for quite a while.

No jack rabbit start and stops.
Maintain it according to the owner's manual.
Check tyre pressure regularly. If your XLE have TPMS, that'll take care of it.

For your peace of mind. Most taxis in lower mainland of BC and Vancouver island are Toyota Prius and Corollas.
My mechanic contracts to repair a couple of these company's taxis told me the Corollas gets around 7-8 lits/ 100km in the city. That's 35-40 mpg (imp).
They'll trade it in when the odometer reads 400.000 km. and gets a decent price for it.
No seious maintenance to speak of other than regular oil change, brake shoes, tyres and occasional fuel pump.

just my own opinion but i really believe in the wonder of synthetic oils. on the 3rd week that i was driving my 09 corolla i had the engine oil and transmission oil changed to sythetic. also i clean my car in a "very" detailed fashion and make sure that i wax it every week or every other week. not to forget to wipe the interior with a damp cloth and always vacuum all the interiors.
