Anyone else hear that Toyota will be dropping this new 2.5L engine into the Corolla XRS quite soon?

I didn't even know they were developing a 2.5L engine. It showed up today at the dealership in a 2009 Rav4. Dual VVT-i 166hp @ 6000rpm and 165ft.lbs @ 4000rpm. Imagine my surprise.

Uhh... it's 180hp, not 166hp.

Doubt the XRS will get it before 2011 though, if it gets it at all.

I doubt it.

1. Their will be heavy demand in the Rav4 and other obvious models that would get it first, like the TC and the Camry.

2. At 180hp, that would kinda stretch the Corolla outside of its market in performance and price.

If its anything like the old XRS, it will be shortlived and used as a means of getting rid of a dying engine platform.

But yes it would be nice.

the xrs is a very fine car. might seem under powered but if only TRD would release either a supercharger or turbocharger. right now the engine of the xrs would just need performance tuning. sad to say but TRD is so slow in their performance developments.

It produces 179 horsepower at 6,000 RPM, along with 172 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 RPM (versus 166 horsepower and 165 lb.-ft. of peak torque of the previous 2.4-liter engine). The 2.5-liter engine employs Dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), which controls timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts (compared to the intake-only previous 2.4-liter engine).

if they put this in the tC, camry and XRS it would fit right in with the last gen xrs 180hp althoe not a high reving low torque engine

hope they do =D
you know you want it

I find my XRS has more than enough power...any more and I think I'd be getting tickets

I find the car already begs me to takeoff on the highway. Its no problem to be doing well over 100 kph without trying. I realize its not nearly as powerful as some other cars on the market...but the 0-100 times are decent enough and its more than powerful enough to accelerate out of the way of a tight situation.

I also doubt that there will be an engine change so soon on the XRS. The power is about right and it competes very well with the Mazda3 GT with the 2.3L. The new engine will probably be all used up in the RAV4 production. I'm interested to see if the Camry gets the new 2.5L or the new 2.7L.

Remember that the previous XRS was a 1.8L... a 2.5L wouldn't really fit in with last Gen XRS... Power wise yes, but size wise not really... A tuned up Current Gen 1.8L Dual VVT-i would fit in better than the 2.4L or the 2.5L

Any thoughts on why? I think so too...but I'm just speculating that the Venza is supposed to be related to the Camry powertrain wise. Maybe not now but in the future.
