the youtube video is debatable.
It happened after a round of trash talking on that forum, both the guys like gentlemen with 9thgen XRS 6 speed and 10th Gen XRS 5 speed went to the track to settle this.
It is only a 1/8th mile track, but they raced multiple times and the 9thgen XRS despite a slipping clutch won every time they both raced. Both cars had intake/header/exhaust. The 9thgen XRS dyno'ed at 182 WHP (well over 205 HP at the crank)
The 9thgen XRS is MUCH lighter (300 lbs) and faster (by half a second to the 1/4 mile).

Not surprising. The new XRS is more mainstream than the old XRS. The old XRS seems to compete more with the Civic Si while the new XRS seems more like a Mazda3 GT competitor.
Not sure if Toyota intentionally left the hole with intentions of filling it with something else later or not.
I can tell you one thing for sure...faster or not...the torque on my 09 XRS is more than enough. Maybe not for winning a drag race tho
The last gen XRS is faster, but the current XRS has better torque and more usable power.
Fact for current XRS owners: no lift and still fun to drive
Fact for older XRS owners: no lift = no fun...

Exactly.

yup the 09 xrs has more than enough usable torque to satisfy most drivers. i guess they're not making the new xrs faster is maybe because it won't be a corolla anymore if it's any faster? i mean people don't usually think of performance when they hear corolla...if i wanted to "race" i wouldn't get a corolla for that lol

Agreed... If it was called the Toyota XRS (Drop the Corolla) then it has potential, however they would have to remove the XRS tag from the Matrix (AKA WHALE) aswell to reserve it for a performance model... It wont happen, but that is the only way I would do it.
I dont care if 9th Gens have more HP... my 09 eXtreme gRocery Sled is plenty fun.

Low end torque = Easy drivablity in the city with traffic.
It would not be for any other sport compact, for that matter including Civic SI or Mazdaspeed 3 as their roots are grocery getter econoboxes as well. But, they are out there and they are doing extremely well.
Nothing wrong with having something from both worlds in a nice compact car with practicality of an every day car with gas mileage well over 30 mpg that also offers the exhilaration, performance and handling of a small sports car and has a race-bred high-revving engine that sounds shockingly like a true racing car.

Good point, but most people wont use the extra 1000RPM you gain from the 9th Gen. So the 10th Gen is an excellent car for the non-enthusiast who want some fun.
Both cars have their own pros & cons and they both work out to have the same amount of pros and cons in the end. Premium Fuel vs. Regular Fuel... High Torque vs High HP... Sleek Aggressive Styling vs. Bland Styling... 6spd vs 5spd...
They are both great cars, with a reliable name. Ya 10th gen has a Camry engine, but the 9th gen isn't as pretty. So if you are an enthusiast and you want a corolla... dont buy 10th, but if you want a GOOD looking car that has enough balls to pass people on the highway, then 10th gen is perfect for you.
You gotta give a little to get a little. And you can tell I'm not too worried about high-end power since I went for the pretty car. I'd rather look good than sound good.

Almost 1900 rpm (2ZZ goes up to 8350 rpm). The real power unleashes after 6000 rpm.

Having owned both and 05 and 09 XRS, they each have their virtues.
Paying $1.50/litre for premium & the constant rattles in my 05 pretty much "pushed" me out of it into a new 09. Oh, that and the fact my wife doesn't much care to be with me when I'm screaming down the on-ramp at 8000rpm. Now 09 XRS feels like it has some serious pulling power over 100kph. I'd be curious to see how both would match up when crusing at 100 and accelerated from there...
