A very obvious question (sorry!)

Hi everybody,

I just have a very obvious and unintelligent question, which I unfortunately will still have to ask since I'm rather inexperienced with cars..

I have 2009 Corolla S auto, and I'm just wondering if it does the transmission harm when I shift from Reverse to Drive without a complete stop. I do brake to slow down the car before throwing it in D; it's a very smooth transition. I don't know why I do this, just a habit and saves some time I guess.

Anyway, thanks in advance and sorry for the lame question haha..

Canada Yes!

You should avoid doing that if possible. Unless you are involved in a car chase of some sort, where the other guy (s) are shooting at you. You shoud not shift quickly into reverse and Then drive. Stop, then shift.

Over time it will damage the trans.

plus it will only take that one time where you are going too fast backwards when you shift and

shift from drive to reverse without stop is a big no no, the gears inside can't shift (have to get a diagram to explain it)

as far as shift from reverse to drive, try to completely stop the car before shifting, get a habit of doing that may save a few thousand miles on your transmission.

Probably will wear down your transmission slowly, try to avoid doing that.

Shouldn't have to worry about it. Just don't push it too hard.

It will put more wear and tear on the clutch, the transmission should be fine.

Nothing happens on a manual transmission when you do that. It only hurts the cluth a little because you have to hold the cluth longer so you can get the car moving forward
