Sorry, help me I'm clueless!

Hi everybody,

I just have a very obvious and unintelligent question, which I unfortunately will still have to ask since I'm rather inexperienced with cars..

I have 2009 Corolla S auto, and I'm just wondering if it does the transmission harm when I shift from Reverse to Drive without a complete stop. I do brake to slow down the car before throwing it in D; it's a very smooth transition. I don't know why I do this, just a habit and saves some time I guess.

Anyway, thanks in advance and sorry for the lame question haha..

You are going in reverse then putting all the stress of stopping your car and then propelling it forward all on the transmission. Its is harder on the transmission than stopping, selecting drive then moving forward. I wouldn't do it, but hey its your car.

sooner or later you are going to damage your transmission and that will cost a lot of money. pray that it happens during warranty. if after warranty anything breaks down in your engine or transmission god help you. save a lot of money now just in time for repairs after your warranty expires. your lucky if your engine doesnt gets damaged too.

Personal experience... i had a sundance when i was in high school and being the idiot that i was back then, i thought itd be really cool to try reversing out real fast and and turn and drive forward like they do in the movies. the conclusion to that experiment was a transmission that can only go in Reverse now. Gears don't even connect for D anymore...

If you want to do that then you should have bought a manual, with a manual you can ride the clutch so your drivetrain doesnt take such a jolt, with a autobox come to a complete stop or start saving now for your tranny rebuild.

reversing and then putting it into drive without stopping isn't too much of a problem. it's being on the gas while going from reverse to drive that hurts the tranny more. i go from reverse to drive without the brake all the time on my 260K 8th gen.

to Whiteness: i told you!!! save a lot of money now because sooner or later you will have to have your transmission repaired or replaced. pray that it happens before your warranty expires. if i were you i would do it a lot more often now and a lot more harder. why? so that it gets damaged now while your corolla is under warranty. same thing with your engine. the way you have done it in the days that passed, your transmission will surely give up on you.

I always underestimate the snark and condescension of online anonymity. But still, thanks for the replies. I guess I won't do that anymore.
