I am very close to buying the 2009 Corolla, my plan is to low ball ( salemans trick - Give the dealer a low price and they give their offers to counter offer ) and let them call me. I met one saleman today at a dealership in the north east side of Montreal, the salemans name rymes with snail. He took my lowball offer and said, OK give me your credit card and I will see if the manager will accept it. I said lets see if the manager will accept it before I give you my credit card. He then gets angry and tells that I am wasting his time and I am not serious. This was in earshot of several other salemen and customers. Name rank and serial number, and never give up your credit card till the contract is signed.

I had this happen to me too. Never ever give them your credit card before hearing the offer.
He insisted twice that he needed my credit card or the manager would not even allow him to make a price. At that point I told him that he did not need my credit card and I would ask the manger myself for him to make me a price. I guess that he did not appreciate that there were salemen and customers sitting within 15 feets of me hearing all this and that the manager would probable get angry at him for not taking charge of the situation and controlling me. He stood up and stuck his hand out hypocritcaly, I shook it and left. Now my strategy is to go to other dealers and make a low ball offer and take the best deal. The end of the month is a good time to do it as they need to meet quotas.

Go to a different dealer.
When a dealer takes your credit card, or drivers license they do two things.
First, they take control of you and you cannot leave until you get it back.
Second they run a credit check on you without your consent. If this happens to many times it can effect your credit rating and raise the interest rate that you will get from a lender.
I don't get why they ask you for a credit card anyway. They don't where I come from.
I take a copy of my drivers license with me and write on the copy that "no credit checks are authorized".
If you are planning to use the low ball strategy it may backfire on you. If you low-ball to much they may not take you seriously and you may never get to the really good price.
Do your research and understand what a fair price should be. Let the dealer make you an offer first. When he does giggle, laugh, or exclaim "Woo, that's high" and say that sales are way down (or something like that) and then give him your low offer. If you are within his range he will offer another price (still high) and then offer to split the difference. Never split the difference. Add a little more to your offer but never split. If you split you will be at the price that he wanted.
I think we went to the same location in as you Hamster Inpector
I first realize from previous visit to other toyota dealer that the price was not negociable. So I went to that dealer saying that I will cut 1000$ of the price wich was rejected, after that I say 500$, they say yes if I give my credit card to seal the deal. I say I would not give it unless they put the window tint and the side moldling, the saleman says "I will take your card and ask for the reduction and those option and will may have a deal if my director accept this". And off he went out of my sight with my Visa. The director accept and 500$ was debited right away.
The funny thing is why other car manufacturer don't do this, I visit 11 brand of car recently and nobody ever ask me my credit card to close a price? If someone as an explanation on this please clarify for our knowledge...
By the way don't have your car window tint done at the dealer they usually go cheap, my tint is damage an poorly applied. Don't leave those precision job to the dealer that hire low cost third party. This tint company even made serious damage to the window (wich as to be replace) and paint (1 big scratch on the rear panel). Next time I will wait for the car to be drop of the trailer and I will take it home with the withe paper and prep it myself.
What a great buying experiece for my first new car... If someone want to know the dealer name ask me for it. I just don't know if I can say it on the forum. Sincerly I would suggest to be more careful than I was in my dealer choice.

I don't get it. If you make an offer and they accept it, isn't that what you want? And if you don't want him to accept your offer....then you aren't being serious and you ARE wasting his time. YOU are the reason car dealers act like this.

This isn't something that occurs in most dealers North of the border. Privacy laws come back to bite them very hard. In Canada you don't get offered different rates based on credit. You'll either qualify at the posted rate or not.
Was the dealer in the north end of Montreal?( hint , hint ) Did the salemans name ryme with snail? ( hint hint )
800over,
You did not understand. He said that he would not give me a price until the manager approved of the price for him to give me, but to get a price he wanted to hold my credit card in his hand to prove to the manager that I was serious. Thats like saying pay for it and then we will talk about price. Never give your credit card until a price is ageed upon. He accepted no offer and was was not going to commit until his manager commited. I was asked to give up my credit card as hostage. As Berg said, they went off and took out $500 from his card to seal the deal. He went to 11 dealers and no one else asked for a credit card before they made the deal.
He took my lowball offer and said, OK give me your credit card and I will see if the manager will accept it. I said lets see if the manager will accept it before I give you my credit card.
My dealer only requested a cc after the deal was signed, and then only as security because they needed to bring the car in from another province, amount of hold was $200

I guess I don't know how credit works in Canada.
Are you saying that everyone in Canada is paying the same interest rate for their loans? Where is the benefit of having good credit?
You can't shop for different interest rates at different lenders?

Interest rate is tied to the term and the vehicle. Ie an 08 Corolla over 60 months is x%. Over 36 months its y%. Either you are approved or not. The rates are provided by Toyota at lower than Bank loans. Only if you have lower credit would you have to go to a higher rate at the bank etc.
