XRS Break Squeal

Hey folks,

Wondering if anyone has any ideas on this. Since its gotten a little bit colder around here...we're not having the 20c days anymore (we're down to 15c and even 10c) my breaks seem to have started squealing. This is new...they have never done that up until now except when it was really wet and damp and I had just started driving. But that always goes away after you break the first few times.

The squeal seems to happen when pressing moderately hard on the breaks and at lower speeds. If I press harder at higher speeds (a half simulated emergency stop) then it doesn't seem to be a problem right up until that last few KPH when they squeal. If I tap them lightly and slow down that way I don't hear anything.

I have a few things that I need to take my car into the dealership to have a peek at and I'm probably going to ask them about this but does anyone else have similar issues or have any ideas?

Note: As I said above...I fully expect a bit of squeal off the breaks when its wet/damp. But not after driving for a while and the breaks have heated up and the water evaporated off.

break squeals are normal only if they dont last the whole time that you are driving.

Yeah thats been my experience as well....I will add it to the list of things that need to be checked.

At this point I haven't noticed any loss of grip so I'm not immediately concerned.

Brake squeal...
Yes we have that!
Started a month after we bought the car. (May or so)
Seems to happen the last bit of long slow breaking after warming the brakes up. Took it to the dealership and they wanted to hear the noise.
Took us a few visits to the dealership before we found a pattern, so that we could make sure they could hear it.
They narrowed it down to the rear brakes, and were able to hear it by using the E-Brake (only after warmed up).
Toyota said they were going to machine the rotors and put new brake pads on. A week later it was back just the same, well it started to get bad again after the week.
Took it back to Toyota and they said they would make a report to "head office", and that since there wasn't a safety issue we would have to wait for them to "make a fix" or a "recall".

It's been 4 months or so with no reply or resolve.
Every time I go there they say "haven't heard nothing".
Brand new car with squeaking brakes.. what a piss off and an embarrassment (to me and Toyota).

Been meaning to call in to the head office and tear someone a new one.

Mine Squeal too. The Dealer checked my brakes for me, and they cleaned them up a bit. But they still squeal (just not as much). I plan on doing a brake mod as soon as there is something available for the '09 XRS.

Mine were fixed...forgot to mention. The report said they were "glazed" and they did a minor machine job on them. Since then no squeal. Brakes still grip properly. Had a bunch of other small issues fixed as well and so far I'm very pleased!

My right rear disc brake on my trix has pretty much always sqeeked also. couple of weeks back I took the wheel off and cleaned the rotor and caliper with brake cleaner and that seems to have really helped. Still hear it sometime when going slow coming to a stop.

Have you had it checked yet? Soon as I took mine in they figured out what the problem was and it was solved. No more squeal...except on cold or damp mornings of course (thats normal).
