CAI my way

I think the factory air box/filter is fine except for the fact that it draws hot, under hood air. Most factory air boxes will flow more air than the engine can draw, despite what aftermarket CAI marketing departments tell you. I don't quite understand the need for 2 feet of tube with a 180 degree bend, so I removed it. Since the white box is simply a noise baffle and not a restriction that I can see, I left it as is. I'm simply after cool outside air, not noise.

This tube and HC filter are now in a box in our attic. I modified the fog light grille as shown to flow cool outside air to the intake tube just above the white box.

Now, to take it one step further and make a true ram air intake, one only needs to run a tube from behind the fog light grille up to the black factory intake tube. Ram air takes advantage of the high pressure air in front of the vehicle when at speed. CAUTION: The combination of ram air and high water could be disastrous. Again, CAUTION, if you do the ram air.

This pic is taken through the fog light hole (grille removed) to show the black factory intake tube (above the white box) and how close it is to the cool outside air at the fog light grille.

Nice. Now that is using your noodle and saving $$ over those high price kits that do the same thing.

Are there any gains that you can feel or tell from mpgs?

Dude, that's very nice!! However, I have a factory fog light and I am wondering how I should do mine...Any ideas? I don't think I'm gonna remove one fog light just to get cold air...

Did you remove your front bumper when you did your mods? My friend suggested the same, by running a tube into the lower grille to get cold-air...I just needa head to Home Depot to get some flexible tubing.

This is a neat mod, and I'm gonna fill up the tank to see if this will improve the car's mileage.

It probably won't but hey it was free and fun and must flow a little better. No $300 aftermarket CAI for me. Those aftermarket marketing depts wouldn't lie to you.....would they?

Have you noticed any change in throttle response? and what did you do with the white box? Bypass it, or keep it in use to reduce noise?

I kept the tube connected to the white box and I haven't noticed any difference yet in terms of throttle. I usually go very light on my paddle and maybe that's why I haven't noticed it yet.

If you were to bypass the white box, you can actually cut the intake tubing and thus, making your own short-ram
