Doing my own rust protection

I am planning to do some rust protection this weekend on my new Corolla. I intended to use a brush and gear oil (gear oil 75w90 seems to be pretty sticky and more viscous than let's say 5w30) to paint all over the underside of the car, cross members, suspension arms, joints, bolts, oil pan, inside the rear wheel wells etc. I might remove also the rocker pannels on both side if that can be easily removed.

The roads here in Montreal in the winter is pretty wet because salt is used to melt the ice and snow

Does anybody know if the spray sold at Canadian Tire called Rustcheck is good? they have two types : the red can and a green can. From what I read, the stuff in the green can is thicker and probably meant to be used underneath the car and is more resistant to water and splash

Also, is that true that parking your car in a garage in the winter is very bad and makes the car rust real fast? ( I mean a home garage with limited ventilation as opposed to an underground garage like in an appartment building)

My bro in law puts that spray on bedliner in a can stuff on his bottom most car parts and it seemed to work for him. I would think not washing off the salt off you car would be more of a factor than whether itts parked inside or out. Even just rinsing with water to dilute the salt is better than letting it sit.

Canada Do it yourself, the better way to go.

Bonjour Hungt1999,

IMHO, I think that all you need is to buy 2 cans of the Rustcheck spray and spray the doors from the vent holes at the bottom. The front fenders can be acccesed from the engine compartment easily. The rear fenders can be accesed from the trunk compartment. As far as the rocker pannels go, I think that with a little spray tube they can ve accesed from under the car. Just spray a little at a time and do it often. No so much that the oile drips out. What you realy want to do is to get some oil on the inside of your doors so that it coats the bottom of the doors, that is where the rust starts. The rust starts inside the fenders on top of the wheel well, If you can spray the top of the wheel well, the opil will drip down coating the rust prone areas.
I do not think you need to coat the underside of the car. All the cars today are well protected there these days. Rust proofing places charge $79.99 to $99.99 to rsutproof your car. I do not think you are getting much more than the 20 oz. of oil that you can boy at Canadian Tire. What you are paying for is mostly labour and overhead.

PS. Yes, parking in a garage speeds up rust. Rust mostly occurs around 0 c. or 32 f. Putting your car in the garage will put your car in that temperature
range for a certain time when you put it in and when you take it out of the heated garage.

you might want to try a product called slip plate or ez-slide. its a graphite impregnated paint usually available at tsc or any farm supply store. you can usually find a better deal online. it comes in spray cans or liquid form for brushing on. i have been using it on 4x4s for years and it holds up great and nothing sticks to your undercarrage.

i was suprised at the lack of rust proofing on my 09S. even though i dont live anywhere near the ocean or snow id still like to spray the chasis.
