Gotta Say something bad about the 1.8l Corolla

The acceleration is f***ing bad compare to other cars in its class. Also the Engine sound is very loud when accelerating. Don't but the 1.8l. Buy the Xrs. Drove the 158horsepower on a camry, oh man much more power than the 1.8.

we know this already or it was discussed in previous threads. Nothing we can do until some sort of ecu remapping modification comes out.

Different strokes for different folks dude. I test drove a 2008 Civic among others in it's class, and I honestly couldn't tell much of a difference. My 2009 1.8 Corolla feels peppier and smoother than my 2005 1.8 Corolla did. The gas mileage, however, is the real icing on the cake. Try getting 40+ mpg in the new XRS (or Civic SI) - it's not gonna happen. It all depends what you're looking for.

it all depends on what the buyer's looking for, guys like you are obviously looking for that kick in their car so XRS is the better choice, but the 1.8 is more ideal for many of us who are into the MPG and are happy as long as we get up to 60 mph...eventually...lol

i would obviously agree the 1.8L lacks good acceleration, but at the end of the day i would never trade my baby in for a 2.4

My Camry uses the same engine and transmission aside from a few gear ratios. If you press the gas gradually, then no. If you mash it into the carpet, then there is definitely noticeable lag.

That is WHY I say one should test-drive before they buy. Test drive different makes and then make a choice. Mazda3's are nice!!

Two replies:

1) I have managed to obtain 40MPG on my XRS on average on more than one instance. Granted, I'm not talking downhill with a tail wind, or "reset the AVG MPG counter while coasting"... I'm talking real, average 40-42 MPG. Sure, it was boring... but it was good MPG!

2) I don't think I've ever experienced a "lag" in the gas pedal on any manual transmission I've ever driven... save for the times that you can't operate the clutch properly! I don't recall any time in my 5M XRS that I've said "Hmmm... the pedal is to the floor and it's not going anywhere yet"

On the other hand, I have had some experience with other people's Hondas (namely the Civic)... and you want to talk about lag?!?!? Yeah... Your tach will be reading 5500RPM and you won't have moved an inch!

Honda timing belt is a bit quieter, but then the $600 price tag to get is changed every XX km's/miles is the price they pay for that...

I have a 1.8 l engine 5-speed manual transmission. This car accelerate good only past 3000 RPM so if you want good acceleration, you have to down shift.

I hate the throttle half second delay. Still not used to it yet. I frequently stalls on start-up from the first gear. Also when trying to accelerate quickly to make your way thru traffic, that slight delay could be dangerous so I am going easy now, not cutting any one because I have had near misses a few times already and almost got hit a few times when I anticipated I had time to cut in front of somebody and that half second delay turned out to be crucial. It could make the difference between a safe move and a dangerous move.

Well, too late to get a XRS now. Anyway, I like the car. The good side of it is that I will experience a tremendous jump in performance whenever I buy my first proper sports car.

Like LBear stated, always test dirve before you buy. To do otherwise is absolutely insane unless you have money to burn, in which case, just buy yourself soemthing else.

Yes, i totally agree. We'll need an ECU remap to fix this or move it down to a more usefull 2000-3000 range. Its not the throttle delay, its the lag and lack of power. Don't be too aggressive unless you can master accelerating quickly and safely. We are still trying to treat it like an XRS which it isn't so for all you S owners like me, just take it easy! Just get a bike or a WRX for whenever you want to go fast. Anybody want my car?....lol jk

Something weird I've noticed, for instance, if I'm going constant 2500rpm, ill let of the gas, it jumps down 300 rpm, bounces up 100, down 50 steady, then down 50 again. And the car feels like it 'stalls' for a split second until it seems like it's catching itself. While the speed remains the same. You can feel like a stall type for a second or so until it catches. I have an S, just got her Monday (already 200 miles on it )

I've kinda noticed a lag, but the response seems a little more deadened compared to my 03. I'm still breaking it in, but today she seems a little more "alive".

My 03 has 127 hp (something in that range), it felt a lot better on acceleration than this does, while saying < 3000 rpm. But it felt better this morning, so I'll run her through her paces again today, maybe it just need to "open up"

Anyway of getting Toyota's attention about this?
