Guys I need help.

I need to know how much sheer force, or just force does it take to scratch our front bumers of a 09 corolla. I just had a naighbor who scrached my car, and did not say a word, so i'am gona confront her tommarow, and tell her that the waight of her car moving at ..... miles per hour = to the amount of sheer stress that caused a scratch on my car. hopefully you guys know, at least what type of plastic out car uses on bumers, and what type of paint and finish. Iam going to be using
The formula to calculate a shear stress is:
where
τ = the shear stress F = the force applied A = the area to which the force is applied to calculate sheer forse which should equal to the waight of her car backing up backwords at apros 3-5mph. Thank you

Damn! You don't need to get all mathematical on someone to tell them that they scratched your car, if you know they did it well just tell them.

Look for corresponding scratch on her car, and/or paint residue that resembles yours, at the predicted calculated angle of contact. Then you have something to talk to her about. You aren't going to prove jack with math with so many unknown variables.

you might want to learn to spell a little better before you take on the task of complex algebraic formulas

Did you see it happen? At least you could try to get her to buy you some touch up paint. Or if it's bad get an estimate from a body shop or insurance adjuster.

It's a question of proof. No formula will definitively determine it.

Proof or eye witness.

You need proof that she scratched your car. If there are paint marks of her car color on your bumper that is proof, you will also have to have coresponding marks on both cars at the proper height. In my city, if you accuse someone you will both be called to a police compound where they will match up the dents or scratches on both cars. I had a old geezer red neck bash into my car once and we were both called to the police compound. I had an eye witness and because he made a scratch on my bumper but none on his, he got off. The cop said he believed me, but there was nothing he could do, even with an eye witnesss. ( the cop said that the witness was far away and could not actualy say for sure that he hit me )

lol, you felt compelled to register just to post this? welcome to the community.

To the OP, no offense, but you remind me of my polymer textile fiber engineering majoring roommate. He would overcomplicate things with proofs and formulas. I would just talk you your neighbor.

Unless of course, your neighbor is a theoretical physicist

the paint comes off that bumper very easily, at least with my black one. especially if you catch it at the right angle.

The paint does seem a little fragile in places. Better read the 'do you wax your car' thread to get a good idea of the waxing knowledge base available on this wonderful forum........

I can almost imagine how that conversation would go

Him: "You scratched my car"
Lady: "No I didn't"
H: "Well looking your car, the angular momentum of your car applied a force over this area of my car, 6" x 9", 54 sq inch area...."
