lets face it the best japanese cars are made in japan. My matrix is made in canada and except for a few rattles I think it's pretty good. Haven't all Corollas been made in California for a number of years?

For Canada/USA:
Corollas are made in Canada, Japan, and California.
Matrix's are made in Canada.
Pontiac Vibe's are made in California.
The Lexus RX350 and RAV4 are also made in Canada as well. The Canada plant was the first plant to produce Lexus outside of Japan. RAV4 production just started there this month.
The Canada plant is one of the best Toyota plants outside of Japan.
Cars made in Japan Starts with a J in the VIN number. Somtime when they do not have enough capacity in the USA or Canada, they will make some cars in other countries temporaily.
once upon a time, i would say it mattered, when employees of japanese automakers were fiercely loyal to their companies, enjoyed lifelong job security and really put their heart and soul into their work on the manufacturing line.
this is no longer the case. worldwide, economies are struggling, including japan. workers are not assured of lifelong employment with toyota and its common knowledge in japan that workers loyalty to the automakers is not nearly what it once was. i have spent time living in japan and my soon to be brother in law works for one of the big auto manufacturers there. i have heard him rave about the cambridge plant in canada, then tear into the laxity that he feels has taken root in japanese plants, due primarily to worker morale. of course this is his opinion, not to be taken as gospel.
additionally, with all automakers struggling to cut costs, plenty of the "made in japan" parts have components made elsewhere, but are allowed to be labelled japanese if more than 50% of the components making up said part were actually manufactured in japan.
so, made in japan using japanese parts, in my opinion, does not mean what it did a decade ago. toyota has very stringent quality control measures in place in u.s. and canadian plants. that is not to say there are no problems with our cars, but the problems are often related to the engineering and design of the car, which will affect the car no matter where it was put together. my yaris was 100% japanese made, but it didnt prevent issues that have not affected my california made corolla. of course, that is just anecdotal evidence.
if i had my druthers today, id prefer my corolla be made at the cambridge, ontario plant.
Toyotas made in Japan are of consistnetly high quality. In my experience there has been a small but noticeable fall off since Americans started building the things.
A japanese plant full of demoralized workers will still produce a car that is better than one GM or Ford could ever put out. As long as it's a Toyota it's going to be more reliable, I'm still going to have faith in my Corolla. Just my opinion of course.
