Airbag Off Light

I just recently changed my stock radio to the Kenwood DDX-512 and noticed that the Passenger airbag off light isnt on. I kind of remeber that it use to be on when nobody was in the passenger seat. I wanted to know, anywith the stock radio still installed, is the passenger airbag off light on? Also, anybody with a aftermarket radio, same question.

The Airbag OFF light only comes on when there is something/someone in the seat that weighs less than a certain amount but more than 0. If there is nothing/no one in the seat then there should be no light.

Try it with a 20lb weight on and off the seat, you should be able to trigger it.

My passenger air bag light only comes on when there is a person sitting in the seat. Otherwise the light is switched to off.

It only happened once and I had the car a few weeks...my daughter was sitting in the passenger seat, and the Airbag Off light was on. I found that interesting, but as I said, it only happened once. The next time she sat there, it worked as it should.

Yup that's cool. If your daughter is light enough, its quite possible that it was just barely underneath the threshold weight, so the OFF light came on. Its designed to do that so smaller children aren't injured by an airbag impact since the seat belt is more than sufficient for them.

It'd also explain that maybe the next time she sat in it, the sensor registered just over the threshold and the ON light was triggered.

In either case, it sounds like its working fine, nothing to be worried about.

Cheers!

So when it says "on"...we are hoping it really works?

As I understand it the ON or OFF light is only linked to the passenger seat. The drivers air bag is always on. Only when something light in the passenger seat (like a small child) it should say OFF anything heavier will show ON. When you're driving along just you in the car it should not display either OFF or ON.

hmmm, not exactly sure how heavy the threshold is set for, 80lbs sounds about right though. But you know what, she might've been fidgiting or shifting around when you noticed it the first time.

If you're really worried about it, you could always mention it when you go in for your next service appointment.

But to me it sounds like everything's alright.

80lbs is still below the safety regulations for a child in the front seat armed with an air bag. they have it turned off because in the case of a crash the airbag would do more harm than good to her. Not sure exactly what the number is but it is around the 100lbs mark for the Airbag to be on with a passenger in the front.
