Ya that is happening to lots of plants.

Oakville Ford is going to "shut-down" for 4-weeks in december/january. and another 2 weeks in February...

Lots of automakers are doing this because of low demands. I'm amazed Toyota is only doing 2 days...

better than 6-8 weeks...

This is a PLUS for Toyota in my eyes considering what other car makers are doing.

I have a feeling that they will have to halt production many times in the coming year(s)

That's gonna really hurt a lot of families depending on that week's paycheck come this December. I hope they don't have to do it a lot.

I certainly hope so, but I have no idea how Toyota treats their employees.

the employee will still get paid...according to toyota

but i think that toyota treat its employee fairly well....after all i heard story ot toyota FORCING its employee to use their paid vacation (look like some of them are so proud of working at a toyota plant that they are reluctant to use their vacations)

One way to keep the Unions away is to treat employees well. Looks like the Japanese companies figured that out a long time ago!

That way the employee has to ask themselves....Would I be better or worse off with a union, should a question arise! UNIONS USED TO SERVE A GOOD PURPOSE...IMHO not so today. The little guy still gets screwed!

I think everyone figured out that going to a Congressional hearing for a $$ bailout for the auto companys IN THE COMPANY'S PRIVATE JETS WAS POORLY THOUGHT OUT...LIKE AN 8 YR OLD WOULD HAVE MADE A BETTER DECISION FOR THE SAKE OF PR!! Those execs must be smoking crack

OT: I think the idea of forcing employees to take their vacation time probably has more to do with having to pay them more if they don't....just a guess!

Canada

We get those two days off, but if you want to get paid you need to use two days of vacation from 2009

Honda and Toyota employees get what the Big Thee gives their employees.

All the trans-plants (Auto makers that are not the big three and originaly from outside North America) give their employees the same benefits as the Big Three auto makers without a union.

I was chatting with an emplyee of the Honda plant in Marysville, Ohio. He sais the only complaint he has is that Honda offers them so much over time that he can not resist and makes over $120,000 a year working for Honda. Of course, that was in better times.

You are given three options.
1) Use PTO (Paid Time Off) days to cover the hours.
2) No pay for those two days.
3) Come into the plant and work eight hours. Non-production, i.e. cleaning or who knows what they will come up with .

I really wonder if shutting down for two days will really make a dent in their overstock of toyotas. I wonder how many cars they can roll out in just two days? Obviously all of their plants in US and Canada combined would be a lot, but would it really do much in the way of speeding up sales? I should have waited before I got my Corolla LE, by now or next year I could have gotten an XRS the way things are going now...

Of course this is in conjunction with a reduction in manufacturing as well as no overtime. It is a warning to the workers that there is worse to come. I can only guess that one days production could be as much as 2000 cars

I heard in the news yesterday that Toyota will extend the shutdown to four days in its 11 plants in Canada and USA

(I did'nt know there were 11 plants, I always thought that there were only 2 plants one in Cambridge Ontario and one in Freemont California)

some more news this morning here:
