I just picked up my 09 XRS automatic yesterday and took it to school today. On my way home I hit a couple of yellow lights and had to firmly apply the brakes. I was going about 60-70km and pushed on the brakes until the car came to a complete stop and then I felt this kick as if the transmission was still going and hadn't completely stopped yet. Like a little jerk after it stops (I didnt pump the brakes just applied them firmly). It was pretty noticlable jerk. The car only has 100km on it now and I dont know if I am breaking it in right or wrong? Do any of the other XRS owners know what I am talking about or should I take it to the dealership. I tried this several times (3 more) and it was the same jerk all 3 time. It depends on how fast I was traveleing, fast speed to stop bigger the jerk. Is this normal? If I decelerate properly and apply the brakes softly and come to a gentle stop there is no jerk. Any suggestions?
Im not sure, but something a little off topic, you probably shouldn't hammer your brakes before you've broken in your car. Im sure it says somewhere in the manual that sudden stops are a big no no till you've hit that 1000km mark.
Even at that point you should take care to avoid situations like that.
As for the jerking, I'll take a stab and say that your ECU hasn't learned to disengage the transmission from the wheels quickly in emergency situations, all of which should be part of your break in period.

Yeah I know you are not suppose to do that but I got caught and I didn't slam them just really pressed them firmly, I think its more to do with the speed, since its a more quick deceleration. Is this really a fact that the ECU learns how your driving behavior?
my car did the same when i first got it...after about a thousand miles or so it went away...i guess the ecu learned my driving style or something...but when i first got the car even coming to a stop slowly i feel a slight jerk near when i'm almost stopped...i have a little over 3000 miles now and the braking feels smoother than before...even when i had to make sudden stops it felt fine.

yeah that's exactly it, this is my first new car so I am really babying it and was really worried when I noticed that jerk. Good to have some confidence now. Any tips for breaking it in other than what Toyota iguide says.
ya it goes away. not to worry. There was thread about this issue back in may/june. Its nothing to worry about. live with it and go easy on the xrs for the first couple thousand clicks.

lol.. ok good to know. Man i love the car, it just wants to go and I wanna open it up but I'm waiting. I haven't had it go over 3000 rpm yet. I am really happy with the torque similar to my mustang but different in a way as it doesn't grunt but revs high. I call it my Japanese torque monster.
FYI I think there have been a couple owners on here that had their tranny replaced due to a 'downshifting flare' problem - I don't mean to alarm you, if you search for it you'll find the threads, but like everyone says it takes a while for the ECU to learn your driving habits. In the case of the downshift flare problems even a couple of owners just had their ECU reset and it helped the problem.
Regarding break-in - I don't think you need to baby it too much, I actually drove mine quite hard for the first few thousand. now I drive like a granny and am getting excellent MPG
I'm curious. Why did those who bought the XRS get an automatic?
-Significant other wouldn't let me get stick
-I could have gotten another model like the LE, but I wanted the Torque soo bad and the xrs looks sooo good.
the only upside is the resale value, and not being on the clutch all the way to work in stop & go...
