Corolla in the snow.....

Well I guess I will find out how the Corolla XLS w/ Trac and VSC handles in the snow this weekend. We are just getting a nasty storm preceeded by 50-100 mph winds (Won't even chance it with the wind), but I am curious how it does in the snow! Not to worry, I have my cell phone just in case LOL...If needed I will call Honda City for a Polar Bear digout!.

Supposed to snow off and on all week and I am sure the roads will be awful. I may even need my snow blower to get out of the driveway the way they are talking....I traded my trusty 4x4 for the Corolla in the balmy days of summer but have always been concerned about FWD in winter!

Wish me luck!

Good luck...we've had light dustings of snow so far but nothing that makes things interesting. I'm a bit worried about the performance of the 17in low profiles in the snow...I suspect that winter tires are in my future. I just hope to have a proper snowstorm that I can go out and try in before there's a storm + somewhere for me to go.

We have a lot of hills around here...winds are picking up as I type. Corolla is tucked in the Garage at least for the night! Snow will begin around midnight but they have no idea how much! Anything over 6" and I will ride the snowblower around! Talk about bad gas milage!!!....about 1/4 mile to a gallon! It never gets stuck....6 fwd speeds and 2 reverse NO HEATER!!

The worst thing we get is Black Ice...nothing is safe in that stuff but this is a COLD storm. Temps will be about 10 degrees by morning. Down from 50 today!!! Ever hear of a High Sierra Snowstorm...NASTY! Near Lake Tahoe, they get it in foot increments...like 4-10 feet at a time...No corollas!!!!!

Thanks

I've 17" low-profile snow tires on my XRS and it does well in the snow Mind you I still have my lowering springs...

Anyway, the VSC kicked in a lot when I turned quickly in road full of snow...It's rather fun

Ahhh some reassurance, but I just have the regular oem M+S...will be interesting...all standard and no lowering. Had a Mini Cooper that hid out in the garage all winter too!

Seen my share of snow...surrounded by some of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. Its hit and miss for us...and so far its been miss for us and hit for some of the other areas around. I suspect that one of those High Sierra Snowstorms is probably a bit like some of the lake effect dumps that we sometimes get.

I have taken the Corolla out in high winds without too much of a problem. Still feels very planted although the nose definitely wants to waver a bit.

we've had snow since mid november and while I do want winter tires, it's actually been pretty good so far on just the all seasons it came with.

I drove three hours last weekend on the highway (including one of the interstates in the US as i'm on the border to the USA) and found no problems with wind or traction as a lot of people complain about.

The only time I notice some resistance is on corners it will sometime fishtail if you aren't careful. Though I'm used to winter driving as I do it for almost the whole year, haha

Im in the same boat gizzer im also from NV. Woke up this morning to what looked like about 2 inches but melting fairly quick. And the black ice is killer here its basically everywhere. Hit some of that on my harley about 6 months ago and ate it hard.

Well hopefully where you are at they will clear the roads. Ha only if you live downtown.

Gizzer,

Where I am, it snowed about 8 - 10 inches of snow with a hard shell of ice that formed with the freezing rain that fell on top of it. The days are alternating warm 15 -20 F ( if you can call that warm ) to cold 0 F to -5 F.
I have found that in city driving, when you are leaving a parking spot where you are inbedded in snow. The best thing to do is to hit the gas moderatly instead of trying to spin your wheels and get out that way. I find you get more traction when you blip the throttle, you will get a lot more traction that way. Or a slow acceleration will also get you out. If you have t rock the car back and forth to get it out, then go foward and hit the brake and stop, wait before you reverse and hit the brake spop and wait a second or two before you go in the opposit direction. My previous car was a Honda, it seemed to re-act much faster when you shift from foward to reverse.

If you get stuck, call me and I have a sled pulled by a team of 8 polar bears, my trusty wolf Jake will ride shotgun ( see his pic next to my name )

Question: Gizzer, what kind of driving do you do? Mostly city, highway, or dirt road?

Well we escaped last night with only a light dusting but some pretty strong winds. At least I know the heater is great in the Corolla! it is supposed to snow all week on and off so I will probably get my chance

Honda City:

I will be at the ready with my snow blower in case Jake gets stuck! I never spin my wheels or try to get out fast if stuck. I first try to rock it back and forth

Jake never gets stuck, he is 4 wheel drive, and he does not like raw seal meat. When I take him for walks and see a pretty lady, I tug on his leash and he sais: ROW ROW. The ladies delight and say, how cute, he is saying HELLO. I give him roast beef as a reward. He is a person too, you know!

I have a Snoppy dog (Beagle) He eats everything, including snow (not the yellow stuff) He has gotten stuck in deep snow though...short legs you know!...he is loved by all the gals but is really a devil in discuise. Given the chance, he would eat my Rolla's insides!
