Road rage, what is acceptable behavior?

Today some dirtbag in a Hyundai cut me off, without regard for his car or mine he cut in front of me in slow traffic. I wanted to teach him a lesson. So as he turned on to a small street, I followed him. Every turn he took, I turned with him. He got nervous and started to speed up to try to get away. He tried to loose me at a red light, but I burned the light to stay behind him.
I started to make threatening gestures because I knew he was looking at me in his rear view mirror. My plan was to scare him as pay back for cutting me off. I followed him for a short distance, but it must have seemed longer bacause traffic was crawling due to a recent snow storm. The streets were greasy and there were mounds of snow all over, even on some of the bigger streets. Just as I decieded that I had scared him enough and was going to let him go, he put on his flashers to turn down a small street. One last threatening gesture, I thought to myself. I pointed to the smaller street and said some choice words to add to the charged atmosphers as I knew he was looking at me in his mirror. As he turned down the small street, my plan was to drive foward and let him go. As I passed the small street, I saw that he had taken the corner to quickly and his rear end had slammed into a snow bank. His front end was at the 10 O clock position on the street, rather than at 12 O clock. This is not so much a confession as it is a bragging.

The issue is one never knows what will happen. Have seen drivers stop their cars on the freeway and start to duke it out tire irons or a fist fight at a major intersection. In the US guns in cars are extremely common.

There is no shortage of bad drivers and it is getting worse.

You must be very young and very foolish.
I drive in Vancouver during rush hour traffic and the scenerio happens to me very often.
I see cars speeding on the curb lane and just swing out when they see obstruction. In the last few days lumps of uncleared snow. Without signalling or consideration if the driver he's cutting into have a chance to avoid him/her.
It's not worth to get all worked up. He'll get his due if he continues this type of behaviour. Why should you be the one to teach him/her.

It's crazy to try to teach someone a lesson by threatening them with your car. It's not just the possibility of guns but also when driving pissed off and out of control people can get killed. Just recently there was an incident around here where two guys were taking turns tailgating each other on the highway. One one of them tried to break it off by taking a sudden exit on the offramp. Car #2 saw what he was doing and sped up to get ahead of him and then hit the brakes to slow him down. Car #1 then jammed on the brakes to avoid a rearender, skidded out of control, rolled the car and was killed. Imagine the memory that your parents/wife/husband/kids are going to have of you if they cart you off in a body bag from doing something so stupid.

I don't know what the hell you are "bragging" about. I get very pissed off in traffic A LOT more than the average person when people drive around making turns without signaling and switching lanes without a care in the world as if they were the only vehicle on the road, or backing right into oncoming traffic just assuming people will stop for them...
Many a time I want to thump some one in the side of their head or smack their windshield with a baseball bat or do some other violent act unto them, but honestly when it comes down to it that would accomplish nothing. The person is not going to start checking their blind spot or accelerating to actual highway speed before merging just because some guy randomly dragged them out of their car once and kicked the shit out of them.

Because of the nature of my career, it pays for me to be a bit paranoid and I have a full concealed carry permit and I carry a 357. Granted I would not mindlessly cut you off in traffic, but if some one followed me and made threatening gestures the way you described there, it would most definitely not end well for that person.
I'm not necessarily saying I would shoot them, but my gun would definitely be in my hand and ready to go to say the least.

My point is, you don't know if that person you choose to harass is an undercover cop or a nervous drug dealer on PCP with a stolen car and a sub machine gun, or an over worked office worker jacked up on Red Bull and Mountain Dew having a bad day who happens to have a tire iron close at hand and decides that its a good day to go loco. You don't know.

If the story you tell is true, then truly you are a fool.

Road rage is for the incompetent.

Save your issues for the therapist, not the roadways.

Hamster Inspector: Gatorade Boy gives you your best answer. Here in the big smoke (Toronto) there's a fair likelihood you'll be toying with a gangster with a gun and nothing to lose. The only difference between here and NYC is that down there they give'em permits for the gun.

Angry

Here is a different scenario for you if guns and violent people don't scare you
(you sound like pretty tough, big, intimating man);

The man you followed got scared so bad he ran a red light and slammed into a 1994 Dodge Neon with a husband, a pregnant wife, and two young children inside. Every one in the car dies within 24 hours, and the man you chased dies as well from swelling of the brain as his head was slammed into his windshield in the collision. His wife and children are left fatherless and go financially bankrupt within a year to top it off.

The first point is while, yes, he was a dickhead to cut you off like that, do people deserve to die because of it?

The second point is, you are an asshole.

road rage...you're just making the situation worse. there's always going to be bad drivers that turn or cut other cars off without looking or whatever, but doing what you do is just making things worse. you're just adding to the fire and giving yourself more stress. i've learned to just let it go and eventually the other driver will learn their lesson the hard way. you guys are just making the road more dangerous =(
