CV joints rattle with very cold tempretures

Ssup ! I noticed that i get a rattling sound when i turn and go, sounds like they come from the CV joints with cold temps (im from chicago), but after driving the car a few miles it goes away. Anyone having this problem too?

Everything has the potential to rattle at lower temps...cold contracts flexible materials, hot expands them.

We've been getting -15c temperatures for weeks now....we have three cars and none of them like the cold that much. All of the brakes squeal for the first few contacts, everything is rattling, and the engine just doesn't like to respond that much. After a couple of minutes on the road everything is fine.

So its probably just cold. Do you park it outside or in a garage?

I park outside; I had a 2000 corolla with 125,000 miles on it and it never had this rattle even on subzero temps. I still have 5000 miles on my 09 rolla and it rattles on the cv joints just because its cold outside, its annoying any advice?

Don't forget CV joints have grease in them, and I would imagine at those temps it's probably the consistency of silly putty.

I have this problem too. It seems it is the differential. At freezing temperature, if I accelerate during sharp turn, I hear a grinding sound. It disappear after driving a few minutes.

Hi have this noise too, usually when it's colder than -10 plus the wind, like yesterday in montreal, after parking it outside for 8 hours, it made that noise, once my engine started to warm up, it stopped. It sounds like it's coming from the wheels, and not under the hood, anyone else can try to tell where it comes from?

It's usually at full or close to full lock when you turn and accelerate

that is exactly what I am experiencing

I wonder if anyone else have this problem? I called the dealer and they have never heard of this problem before, they told me to bring the car in for inspection but I have not had the time to do that yet

It's getting a bit warmer in Montreal these days but still freezing temperature about -10C in the morning. The grinding noise is still there but only last a few minutes when I start driving in the morning after the car has been parked all night outside. It grinds only if I accelerate hard in a sharp turn and tend to be more prominent if one of the wheel start slipping under snow

The grinding noise does not seem healthy at all. I hate that noise, it reminds me someone scratching a blackboard with their finger nails LOL

anyway it does not seem to be a big deal but I wonder if the grinding is due to the lack of lubrication of the CV joints or gears or whatever until the car warms up, it will prematurely wear out?

Bring it to your dealer, only problem is we're going to have somewhat warm weather in Montreal...

Let us know the outcome.

I called the dealer, the earliest appointment I could give me was beginning of March! by that time, it will be much warmer and they won't be able to reproduce the problem

I told them that but the guy said, sorry they cannot give me an earlier appointment

I am phoning other dealers around to see who is available
