defogger setting

I was wondering why the vents stay open when i switch it to the defog setting for the AC/Heater. Its fine at times, but when there are other bad smells on the road from cars to other crap i cant stand it being open. can this be changed so that the vents are closed and its clean air.

You can temporarily switch to recirculation mode (closes the fresh air supply vent) to alleviate any undesirable exterior odors. The only drawback when using this mode for a prolong period of time is fogging of the interior glass surfaces and lack of fresh air. The recirculation mode can be selected regardless of the position of the air distribution knob.

In actual fact, if you have you air setting on defog the recirculate light will go out automatcly. In warmer weather it is hard to know if the car in front of you has just gotten on the road and is sprewing smelly exhust gasses. In cold weather like we have now we can see white vapours coming out of the tail pipe due to the warm engine exhaust hitting the cold condensed vapours in the muffler. Just turn you air setting to recirculate for a few minutes.

I stand corrected. Never realized that the recirculation selection was physically inhibited with any of the defrost settings. I guess the designers did this to reduce the amount moisture that would be present during a defrost cycle. It would defeat the whole point of trying to defrost the windows if you trap the moisture in the car with the recirculation feature. You're always learning new things unless you take the time to read the entire owners manual.

It is a realy useful feature for the recirculate setting to go off automaticly when you have you vent settings on defrost. On my last car ( and on most older cars ) the recirculate setting does not go off automaticly. You could actualy set you defroster on and drive for quite a while before you notice that the frost on your windows is not going away.

As ive known it on newer cars, the recirculation will turn off automatically if a defrost mode is selected but you can turn it on again when in the mode. Ill have to play with this....

I thought my the button was broken at first so I checked the manual: recirculation turns off and stays off until you go to a mode where it is allowed.

The only reason I can see for this being a forced option is that people do not know that fresh air has less moisture. Kind of inconvenient, but, you can't please everyone.
