I'm looking into getting a new car, and it's between a 2009 Jetta or a 2009 Corolla. I've been driving a '99 Corolla for a while now, and it seems like a good time to change things up.
Just looking for some general thoughts, how does everyone like their '09 Corollas? BTW, I am looking at the Canadian LE model (w/ Smart Key system & auto climate control). So if anyone has one of those, I would appreciate thoughts!
i upgraded from a 99 corolla to an 09 corolla.. you will be blown away with the differences between the two. the 09 is a great upgrade and i'm sure you'll love it from the day you take a test drive!! not to mention it's much roomier and quiet.
Haha, I'm coming from a 99' Corolla as well...a VE as well. I love the 09 Corolla...for me it's much more fun, and good looking. It all on preference of course, but I think Toyota really did something right with the styling. Fuel economy is great and while it isnt a rocket...gets me around town nicely.
I don't have a Corolla yet, but we are leaning towards the LE. I like the combination of convenience items, comfort, room, safety, reliability and fuel economy. I wouldn't have considered the previous generation, but I like the new car. Considering it against the Civic, but with a higher insurance cost and less options for the same price on the Civic, it's highly likely we'll be grabbing it in a few weeks when my income tax refund comes in.
The Smart Key is a real nice option for the class of car, and my wife relly likes the automatic climate control. Don't care much about the simulated woodgrain trim or the chrome handles, but I guess these do make the car look a little nicer. Go with the 'rolla, just don't buy the magnetic gray color I'm leaning towards!
I've got an LE, and I love it... The only downfall I would say that I'm in the process of fixing/changing is the tires... The stock tires they came with are okay, they're just loud on the road and the ride quality isn't the greatest... given I drive in a town with crappy roads... But a new set of tires with a wheel package is my solution haha... I've never driven a 'Rolla until this gen model, and I was hesitant as well in purchasing, but after a day or two, I fell in love...
I have the Canadian LE. It's much nicer than the S and CE interiorwise. The fake wood trims, sliding 2 level centre armrest and different center panel are only in this model. Of course it also have smart key, auto climate and auto lighting and 16" alloy wheels.
I have it since June '08. No regrets. Car rides solid, quiet, roomy, comfortable even on long trips, economical and very important (to me) uses regular gas.
My last car was a BMW 535I.

I'm in the process of considering the LE, what's this "auto lighting" you're referring to, not sure I know what that is.
the shape of the jetta looks a lot like the 9th gen corollas i think. i like the jetta but i don't trust their reliability and that they're built in mexico =( i almost got that car but couldn't talk myself into it. the jetta will feel more luxurious than the corolla and everything is in the jetta is just so high quality. seriously, when closing the doors on the jetta it doesn't sound like a tin can. corolla will get better mpg tho since it is a smaller engine and lesser power. you're asking this in a corolla forum so the majority will praise for the corolla. i own neither one of those but test both and must say i love the jetta but would get a corolla...kinda weird but i guess it all comes down to their reliabilty lol

Yeah. I've heard that the reliability of the Jetta has improved a lot since the past, but they seem like more finicky cars to me. They require some special oil that you can only get from VW apparently (the TDI's, that is), have to follow the maintenance schedule meticulously, etc. I kinda want a car that's more hands-off, that I don't have to worry about all the time, you know? That's why I'm looking at another Corolla. It's reliability can't be beat, at least in my experience.

When I start the car, release the parking brake , lights turns on by itself. If it's bright, DRL (Daylight Running Light)will be on. If at dusk. Either in early morning or evening when it's dark or getting dark all lights come on by itself. ie. low beam & tail lights. Dash indicator will show lights have been turned on. You can also select high beam. All without turning on light switch. When I park and stop engine with parking brakes on, all will be off.
Takes a bit of getting used to at first. I have to stop car and see for myself just to make sure the first few times.
But should you turn on light switch manually. You have to manually turn it off or it'll stay on even when engine is off. I don't know why. Other cars I have will turn lights off after some seconds but not this one. To tell the truth I did not test it this way. Maybe it'll turn off. I'm not sure.
