I read another in a long line of articles over these few months talking about auto sales plummetting, great deals on new cars everywhere, prices of new cars going down and that's one of the reasons I'm looking at a new car over a used one, which was my original intent.
So... my question is, given all the factors of what is happening right now, go why, when I go into my Toyota dealer, is there not even a hint of a deal to be available from them, except for a token accessory thrown in. Yes, I realize Corolla's sell well in Canada, yes I realize it is a great quality car, but man, the deals on other cars are just so tempting.
Maybe next week when (I hope) the Red Tag deals come out there will be a better offer, but right now, the Corolla is at an even bigger premium compared to other vehicles in its class.

Compared to what? The price of the corolla has gone down More than $2000 in 1 model year. It's the cheapest it's been in 10 years. Oh and yes Toyota sold a record number of cars in January.....

Seriously? The '08, which I wasn't even in the market for, cost more than the '09? I didn't know this, has the '09 come down in price since it was introduced last February? I've only been looking since about November, so price reductions are news to me.
And the comparison is to other cars like Honda and Hyundai, who are offering interest rate deals and other incentives. Not to even talk about the Big three vehicles that are offering 0% and big discounts right now.
I'm not saying the Corolla isn't worth it, just talked to the sales guy on the phone in fact, just curious why they weren't at least following somewhat with deals from elsewhere. The Toyota company is offering deals, but surprised the local dealer, whom I know has seen sales fall, isn't offering something of their own.
I got mine back in October 2008 with 0% financing for 36 months. that and I got it to about $2000 below sicker and some free options because they didn't have exactly the one I wanted. so there are def some deals to be had. but then again I'm not in Canada..
US definitely have better prices than Canada.
When I bought mine in May 08 I did shop US. Mostly Washington State.
Toyota then. Maybe even now discourage US dealers selling new cars to Canadians.
Canadians buying cars from US will not get warranty in Canada and US dealers selling cars to Canadians will get less cars from Toyota.

As nmehes mentioned, it's the price drop. The base Corolla CE costs about the same as a 1997 Corolla SD and that SD did not have a radio or airbag (driver's was optional) or power steering. Toyota has aggressively priced the new Corolla and it shows in its sales. The new Venza is also a fantastic value at $28k for such a well-equipped, flexible and good-sized vehicle so Toyota Canada is playing the pricing game well.
Compare the Corolla to the Civic. You get a lot more for your money at $18k for a Pkg "C" CE than a DX-G. For example, you get heated mirrors, colour-keyed door handles, rear cupholders and bottle holders, 60/40 split folding seats, maplight, OAT gauge, automatic headlights, trunk release on keyfob, TPMS. You do get lightweight 15" alloys in exchange for all those.
The Mazda3 is a bit of a steal too though but you may not get much discount since the '10 model just came out. There may be a few '09s left that you can get your hands on.
