With cracks you are better served to have the glass replaced (please don't kill the messenger) due to the crash resistance specs on strength. e.g. when cutting glass, you etch a line on the surface with a glass cutter and it usually breaks on the line - I did say usually
I'd check with the dealer (yes they are expensive, it's because aftermarket glass is usually distorted garbage by comparison, and also lacks noise insulation, etc.) to get a quote and then check with your insurance company.
Some insurance companies (also depending on the state) offer windshield replacement for this exact reason within their policies. Alot of time it's without the usual deductible.
It stinks when it happens, but think what would happen if the glass wasn't there!!
