The good and the bad STS systems

Well luckily I found a dealer here in reno that does the STS turbo systems. The good they are willing and doing all they can to get the right parts to install the STS on my XRS. The bad they are having very little luck. Mostly problems with piping turbo size and fuel injectors.

I do have a couple of questions though. I forgot what engine model we have? if anyone knows thats great.

And do we share the same engine with the 08 and 09 TC and XB or just the 09 model?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

We have the 2AZ-FE, and I'm too lazy to look at scion's website or wherever to see if they changed engines for '08-'09. Only difference is ECU mapping.

... And exhaust.

The STS turbo is only good when your place is dry all year round. Since the turbo is under the car, there may be a chance that it sucks up water from the turbo and hydrolock your engine. For XRS, I rather wait for TRD or any other aftermarket company to come up with a supercharger. Or else a traditional under hood turbo

I doubt there is a problem with water ingestion on the STS system. Surely they took that into consideration in the design phase. Drastically lowering under hood temps (by moving the turbo) and eliminating the intercooler give the STS system a big advantage, IMHO.

The engine model is shown on a sticker under the hood.

I can see trying to do a STS setup on the 2zr-fe (1.8L) since the exhaust is a PITA to get to. However on the 2az-fe (2.4L), your exhaust is towards the front of the car and you have plenty of room to put a engine mounted turbo. It'll look better and perform better than the sts setup. As for me, I have the 2zr-fe so the turbo idea is kinda shot but I'm hoping either toyota comes out with a supercharger or custom fabbing a vortech supercharger (hopefully!).

people can get hydrolock engine with their CAI. The suction the power of the turbo can really cause some issue there. Imagine you are on a set of coilover that lowered you car, only a little pond of water will cause the problem there, don't even mention snow in winter. It has its advantage but totally offset by its disadvantage as well.

You can 'what if' all day long. I'm just saying that STS has taken things into consideration and designed their system accordingly. Is there proof (other than opinions) they haven't?

The guys working on the STS task are still hard at it they might just go with a turbo set up for the 08 2.4 litre scion. They will just have to tune the system and they are thinking about sending my fuel injectors in to be re-jetted. I will keep you guys up to date on this. And let you know the turbo system I end up with. So it does look like there is some insight. Even if I do have go with the STS system they can install a forward mounted turbo. As for the hydro lock issue the intake is installed under the rear bumper high enough with a cover to prevent this issue if rear mounted. Or so they say. Either way they are excited to work on my corolla it will be there first besides there usual corvettes and mustangs and suv's. I did get a ride in there new install of a dual turbo sts sytem on a corvette it was great.

This should be interesting to see the outcome if they do the STS.
Maybe a new kit might be born!

What are you going to do about the transmission?

Isn't the intake on the STS still up high?

Well unfortunetly they are having problems re-programming the ecu. So for now I have my car for the next 4 months while they figure out what the deal is. There would of been way to much modification for the 08 scion turbo system to be installed on my car. They said with in 4 months there should be plenty of other systems out. They also said they are heavily looking into a greddy system since there are a lot of those made for scion's. As for the tranny they will be installing a better clutch plate. They are a great shop and are looking at it from every angle. So it looks like it will be a little while. I will repost this thread hopefully 4 months from now with pics of my turbo charged rolla.

Have them look at Turbokits.com and see what they are packaging with the kits for the TC. Perhaps the AEM FIC might be the way to go...

No one's ever cracked the Toyota ECU for the previous gen so I don't think it will be an option unless they somehow get permission from Toyota.
If they do I'd eat my cigarrettes...
