Air Box emmisions screen removal

I removed the emmisions screen from the airbox todahy and saw a noticable inprovement in drivability. I have a 5 speed and always noticed a stumble starting out in first gear unless I slipped the clutch a bit. The stumble is now gone, and almost no jerkiness at all shifting into the other gears as well. I don't know what the mod would do for those with automatics, but it sure made my stick more drivable. There is also a very slight increase in intake noise which sounds nice but still dead quiet at cruise which I also like.
It also feels a but snappier, but I would expect that by getting rid of the restriction and smoothing out the flow.

i'm not into changing the intake, but a few little things here and there are always nice.

TRD air filter on the way.

No pics needed. Unclip the cover, flip it over you'll see the screen. Pry it out with a flat blade screwdriver and you're done. Takes about 2 minutes. Doubt if you can save the screen 'cause the 6 tabs are melted on.

Here's a pic of the HC emissions filter is in the top or lid of the stock intake. I could tell zero, zip, nada difference with it removed.

CAI my way

Went one step further (copied from my other post)

I removed everything in front of the airbox and removed the emisions filter in the airbox. It has more of a sports car sound when accelerating and is definitely smoother. No noticable loss in torque and it's a little better high end. Drivability is also improved.

Taking in "hot" engine bay air doesn't bother me. It's no different in temperature there then where the stock inlet winds up so no improvement or loss there, but taking 3 ft of plumbing and the carpeted flex tube out of there definitely makes for a straighter path.

I would say that with the TRD filter I have on order, it will probably work just as well as the weapon intake, only be a hell of a lot cheaper.

I didn't want to go low with the plumbing like some of you guys did because I didn't want to turn my motor into a wet vac.

Good stuff, I did the unclip the airbox and was amazed to find that screen. Now I know the purpose, it is useful but sucking out power for sure. Did some little testing of my own and it is definitely something worth looking for when you want better engine response. But I am no mechanic.

hey todayI removed the screen and the plumbing before the airbox. I didn't cut the flex tube so I just removed the whole plastic piece that comes out of the airbox too. I noticed that the plastic piece had a third hole in it right before the flex tube part. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what that was for.

Thanks

Yeah, that "hole" goes into the plastic resonator box that sits in the fender well. Not important for this mod.

No...

As long as you still have your regular air filter you are fine. The Emissions filter is there to prevent CO2 from escaping your engine through the intake system (or something like that). It is redundant protection to make the Toyota Cars "Super Green".

Now if you took both Filters out, both Intake & Emission screen, then yes dirt would get in.

think of the resonator box as an intake muffler. no throaty growl from your intake (or a reduced one at least) It is just one extra place for the air to spool in

It is wishful thinking unless you add a high flow air filter, at which point removing the screen will make a difference.
