Hey, does anyone here know what purpose the white plastic mesh screen directly above the air filter on the 2.4L has other then serving to farther restrict air flow? Has anyone removed it? And if you have where there any gains?? I can see no purpose for it... I plan on switching to a full CAI once the funds become available but since I am currently doing a frame up rebuild of an old Jeep YJ money is tight...

It's to help prevent gas fumes from going into the atmosphere when the car is shut off. That's why it has little activated charcoal pellets in it.

I removed mine and also got rid of most of the intake on my 1.8. I just have about a 1 ft. section that comes off the airbox and angle cut it. it works great, sounds better and has better drivabilty and a little more power. also lost about 1 mpg, but that;s the tradeoff for a little more power. Also have a TRD filter coming in any day.

^^^^thx for the reply, i never noticed charcoal pellets in it, guess i didnt look close enough.

i have always thought that better airflow actually helped to improve gas mileage... maybe i am wrong
