I was heading to town at about 0500 this morning when a state trooper blue lighted me. He said he had stopped me for driving without lights. Well, it was light enough I didn't really need headlights, but, to my surprise, I discovered the tail lights no longer illuminate with the running lights as they did on my old Corolla.
He didn't write me up since he saw my temp plate, but he was kind of a wise__s. Told me I should read the owners manual and visually check all aspects of the car for other changes I may not know about.
Maybe Toyota should publish a list of changes for us old guys, lol.
Must be something weird for US Corolla's. Don't you get the light-sensing headlights that automatically go in the dark? This is hooked up to Canadian Corolla's - and the taillights go on too automatically with headlights.
but if it's bright enough your automatic lights didnt kick in why did the trooper still pull you over? the headlights usually come on with plenty of lights around so if they're off it's usually bright as hell outside
Only my headlights work with DRL's. That's why I increased the sensitivity so they work sooner and with less light. Just stick a 3/8 inch piece of felt over the light sensor. Try it, if you don't like it pull it back off.

owned mine for over a year, have yet to actually turn on the lights, daylight sensor turns them on and off when needed (including the taillights)

Tails are default off even with front DRL's on. They come on automatically when the sensor turns on the front lights on though.
On another point, I wish the cops here would pull more people over for driving with no lights on, it annoys me to no end when its pitch black and you see oncoming traffic with only just DRL's on.

I often wondered if the sensor was good enough...I think I will play it safe and give teh tip a try
My tail lights do NOT come on with the driving lights. I'm upstate NY. Drivers side door panel says 'Made In Japan', not sure if that means my car wasn't assembled in US. When I see other drivers with their headlights on, and my instrument panel lights are still off (meaning headlights still off), I flip the head lights on manually. Doesn't matter if it's still light outside, if others are using their headlights it means YOU are invisible from their glare. I certainly prefer not wearing out tail lights unnecessarily, if the cops leave me alone.

May I suggest you take your complaint to the Chief of Police, Sheriff or State Police. Doubtful anyone on this forum can effectively address that issue. Good luck.
