so my family and i went for dimsum this morning and after we decided to walk around and went to don valley north toyota (located in toronto, ontario canada). we spent around 3 hours there with introduction, testdrive, blah blah, and negotiation and then we ended up buying a corolla.
we bought a 2010 corolla ce with the enhanced convenience package, with rust proof and extra care protection (84 month 120k), all season floor mats. i think the total came up to $24,797 then after some talking it ended up at $23,600.
so my question is how good was this deal? honestly i wouldve gone for $22,500, but my parents and my sister (her car) were desperate and i'm sure the salesman/ manager knew so they stood strong with the price.
so anyone willing to give feedbacks/ suggestions on this impulsive buy? itd be great if anyone working for toyota could pitch in their $0.02
=)
edit: my sister is applying for the $500 rebate since she just graduated last year. the total with tax was around $25,406 (w/o the $500 deducted from this total)
im not sure how corolla prices are in Canada but converting to USD, that price is absolutely horrible unless you're factoring in the finance costs in that figure.
Where in live in Quebec, we can't bargain anything at Toyota. It's the full price for everyone. Same thing for Honda and any Japanese car. But if I go to GM, it's a different ball game, and we get thousands off, but I prefer Japanese cars. I,m surprised that you were able to make them drop the price.
rust proof and extra care protection (84 month one)
Those two combined are over $3000 (USD) on a car that completely does not need that level of protection Maybe they are cheaper in Canada...

It shows! Your family is a salesperson's dream. Anyone who looks desperate and is willing to sign up for extra coverages is just asking to get taken advantage of.
For a brief comparison, at the today's currency exchange rate, I paid $14750 CAD ($13500 USD) + tax out the door for my 2010 Corolla CE. Maybe you can not haggles as much in Canada, however what you paid just seems way too high. How much extra was the rust proofing and 84 month warranty?

rust proof was $699 and the ecp was $1599
this car is automatic
edit: my sister and i are still in shock since the purchase happened so suddenly. my dad's friend called in the morning to tell my dad he bought a new car from toyota so i think that made my dad want to buy one too
It's totally different here in Canada. The MSRPs are substantially higher and the most you will got off MSRP here is 5 or 6 hundred bucks. Thats all I got off my CE last year. MSRP for a Ce with enhanced here is $19300+ freight, taxes and anything else you get. In the US people are getting thousands off their Corollas where prices are already must less. I'd say the price you paid is about right for a Canadian Corolla. Don't sweat it.
The US economy is such that they are desparate to get the consumer buying...even at a near loss if they have to. The Canadian market is much more stable in comparsion, so the dealerships are not as much panic to sell.
Still, buying the extra care warranty for a Toyota is kind of pointless IMO. Its a Toyota, one of the most reliable cars out there. I thought everyone knew that the rust protection was a sham..but I guess not.
I guess I was just spoiled in the fact that Alberta has the best prices on Corollas in the country...

Hmm...assuming you're Chinese (I am) since you were at "dim-sum" (yummy), I would think that culturally we would haggle a lot more on the price. Good thing is that those "extras" bought can be canceled. Read the fine print on the contracts your folks signed.
yeah i'm chinese, i wanted to but my parents were like, "these guys have to make money too,we're helping the economy". from my years of experience from playing mmorpgs i get the psychology of selling/ buying things lol, i'm sure we could've gotten a better deal.
the rust and extra warranty were bought since my family plans to own this car for 10+ years
the finance manager there wanted us to buy the stupid paint&fabric protection too, but my dad was like if the paint came off as easily as you said then it wouldnt be a corolla
edit: keep in mind that here in toronto it snows quite a lot in winter and a lot of road salt is used. however, keep the comments coming it'll improve our buying experience when we purchase another toyota in the future =)
you could have gotten an xrs for that price without the packages you got. i got mine for $23500 out the door including free tints and hood tape. add the toyota floor mats for $100 it comes to about $23600. i also got the $500 graduation discount. mine is manual so i saved some money there as well compared to an automatic. i live in edmonton, i shopped around a lot and when i saw the deal i wanted i was still willing to walk out the door if we were'nt able to negotiate on it.
i am not sure what the enhanced convinience package includes. if i am rite the CE comes with an extendable center console arm rest ? thats the only thing i would be interested in getting on my xrs.
My XRS was close in price to your CE, came in at just under 22,000+frt&tax, incl power everything, moonroof, ac, cruise and on and on....

By that logic, if spending $1600 on an extended warranty was a good idea, the car would not be a Corolla either. Or if you had to spend $800 just to keep the car from rusting out into a pile of dust, it would not be a Corolla. "Rust proofing" can actually cause rust. Cars are rust proofed from the factory within reasonable limits, putting another layer of coating on top of that can prevent both layers from working correctly. Also the areas that get sprayed are almost never the parts of the car that would rust out first.

True. If they plug any drain holes with the rustproofing, or there was any moisture in the seams when they coat it, it will aid in corrosion. The car's are good as is.
