Instrument cluster backlights turn off?

Twice while I've been driving early in the AM (still dark out), I've noticed the cluster lights go out. Are they supposed to remain on all the time? Do I have a loose wire or a fuse problem? tia

On my 09 LE, the dash lights turn on and off when the headlights are turned on or off. I don't know for sure where the light sensor, for auto on-off, is located. I think it is in a bump in the center of the dash, but my memory is unclear. Typically there is a switch on the dash for dash light brightness which may be able to turn the dash lights off if rotated to the extreme and turn the dome lignts on if rotated in the opposite extreme. I haven't messed with it on my Corolla so I can't be sure it is there, but it probably is. If that doesn't help, check the fuse, but if the fuse is blown, you probably have a an electrical system problem and I would take it to the dealer since it should be under warranty.

The lights are going out because the DRL automatic lighting circuit kicks in.

I found that this happened because the light sensor on the dash to be too sensitive. I corrected mine by adding a 3/8" dot of black felt on the top of the dome shaped light sensor on the top of the dash by the air vent. My cluster lights (and driving lights) stay on longer and in lower lighting conditions now, especially when it's overcast and raining. That fixed it perfectly for me. A couple of other guys have done this and liked the results as well.

As such however, there is nothing wrong with your car.
