I just bought a new 2009 Corolla a few weeks ago. Well today I was underneath it installing a trailer hitch when I noticed that only half the car is undercoated. Its like a straight line down the middle of the car from from to back. The right side has the black coating and the left side does not, its a perfect straight line. Is this normal? The left side seems prepped for it as there is some sort of white-ish material applied to the weld seams and stuff, but no black stuff. It looks like it would really be a bear to apply this stuff now after the fact with all the parts that are mounted under there such as the fuel tank and stuff. Anyone else have this problem? Or maybe everyone should look under there car, I know its not a common place people check often. Wondering what i can do about this.

Don't bother. They're fine from the factory. Lots of debates on this if you do a search.

I think its a factory coating though, not a dealer applied one. Its very thick black stuff. The side that does not have it is just sheetmetal. I am pretty sure it was factory applied. That is my concern. I live in Minnesota which is horrible for rust on cars.
the local dealer here often has a car in the showroom propped up on its side showing off the toyota undercoating... they undercoat 1/2 the car from front to back straight down the middle, the other side is left clean... maybe you have a undercoating demo...
... if u plan to keep the car for years undercoat it! if not don't waste your time

Toyota uses galvanized dipped metal on the bottom and zinc based primer. You'll be sick of the car long before it rusts out under there. All the critical seams are taken care of and the side skirts and wheel wells are all plastic or coated with a thick material where stones and rock salt will hit it. Just wash it consistently and you shouldn't have any issues. So again, don't worry about it.

Ahhh, maybe that would explain it. Perhaps I can talk the dealer into finishing the job. lol

Ok, good deal, so it sounds like the normal car has no coating on it underneath, it would just look like normal metal for the most part. There are certain seams that are treated with something and that extends to some areas up in the fenders and stuff.

I normally keep my vehicles for years... Probably wont have the rolla much longer since I just can't get past the "it's only a car that is confined to the pavement thing" (user name is trucknut after all) If the Corolla was say a Tacoma (which I should have bought) 20 years from now I would still be driving it. When you keep vehicles that long in this climate you undercoat for protection from rock chips and spray every nook and cranny down with oil! Or you get up at 7am on a Sunday morning to go cut out rusted sheet metal and weld new in... guess what I am doing today John? Gotta luv those old wranglers

Yeah, the old ones were brutal. Thankfully, mine was the full galv body and I had no rust at all. Happy cutting!
