Cracking Type Noise when turning

I noticed when ever I startup and turn my wheel left or right and drive off I hear this cracking noise.

It's hard to explain but it sounds as if you hold a plastic bottle and slowly squeeze it, to get the similar sound. It only happens once the car is off and then started and you drive off. If I drive off in a straight line and don't turn the wheel I don't hear the noise. I also noticed once you hear it, it won't make the noise again until you shut off the car and restart and drive off again.

I did take it to the dealer but their reply was that they think it has something to do with an ABS check with the lines and when the wheel is turned that's what is causing the noise. If this was the case it should make that noise even when driving straight? They said they heard a similar noise on a Corolla they had but when they turned right. They also said not to worry because I have lots of warranty left. Would it not be better to fix it if something is wrong rather then have it get worse?? To be honest I don't really believe that explaination as I have never heard of something like this before. I could be wrong though.

Have anyone else heard this noise on their Corolla? If you want to check, make sure your car has been parked, start it up, turn off the radio (to listen better) and turn your wheel left or right and slowly drive off. For me even if I shut off the car right away and re-start I will hear the noise again.

Faulty CV joint? Take it somewhere else to get a second opinion.

My 98 Grand Marquis would make a noise every time It was started and hit 15mph.
It was the ABS initializing. It sounded more like a hydraulic pump whine.
As far as fixing something, you need to know what is wrong and apparently they dont.
Sometimes finding the cause of noise issue can drive you insane.
Just make sure when you bring the car to the dealer they document the complaint and you get a receipt
with the complaint and findings.
Drive it a while and see what happens.

I have not had a chance to bring it to another dealer yet. Do you notice the same sound with your car?

I do not know if my 09 camry has the same issue as yours. But I do however notice that noise coming from my passenger side. Mine sounds like a creeking sound or sometimes as you describe it a plastic bottle being squeezed. It never existed before until I got my car an alignment because it had gotten towed. When i apply pressure to my brakes I hear noise but only to my passenger side. When I am moving on a uneven paved road going at 25-35miles I hear the noise but on highways speed i do not hear it. When I reverse I also sometimes hear it.

I brought it over to the same dealership that I purchase it from and 3-4 different occasions they could not determine the cause. My last visit they had told me to use a better gas grade which really made me consider not taking my car there anymore. I regret buying a Toyota from BOCH toyota.

no there are no weird sounds with my car. it has been a year and half now except for the oil consumption issue mid last year and the freaking radio reception which prevents me from tinting the windows.

No only because it's happened like 3 times, but I will once I hear it a bit more frequently. The dealerships here don't do much except for saying it's not a big deal, bring it back later.

mine does this too. I always notice it when i reverse out of my parking space and drive off. Never fails... reverse out, first gear start rolling and the crackling happens. I have no idea what it could be. I would agree it sounds like something engaging (ABS ?? like mentioned above) i don't know.

I think I've heard this noise in my '09. It sounds a lot like strut noise. I had an ordeal with replacing the front struts on my '93 Camry and they made popping noises when turning before the installation was redone. It's very rare and hard to reproduce in my Corolla. That means it's not getting fixed by the dealer before I'm out of warranty.

are you guys sure its not because you arent moving while turning the steering wheel, making the tires move on the pavement causing pebbles to grind on the pavement...which create that sound...
