If you buy an OBDII reader, make sure it will read the "C.A.N" OBDII protocol and is of decent quality. (The 09 Corolla uses the C.A.N protocol). here is a link to a basic reader that also will clear the computer codes as well. (most will)
I think there are about 5 different OBDII protocols out there

(I have nothing to do with this company, but do own their 3100 model) Some of the real cheap ("NO Name") older models do not support C.A.N., and if really crummy, could fry parts of the car's computer circuitry! Their are lots of decent basic readers out there starting at about $60-$70 USD
A basic reader is a good thing to have IMHO...Just to keep the dealer or mechanic Honest

.
A lot of stores like Kragen and Autozone will read out the codes for free, so you can jot them down & look em up on the net yourself. There are lots of
generic OBDII codes, and some others that are SPECIFIC to the brand of car, so you may have to search a little harder once you have the code!
