Driving Corolla 2010 in Shift 3 instead of D

I have been driving my Corolla 2010 in Shift 3 for 5 months now, when I test drove it at the dealership, I was told it was supposed to be in on the 3 but I think the salesman was new and didn't understand how to drive one. Now I realized it was supposed to be on the same level but on the right at the "D" for drive from the informationI got I thought the 3 and D were the same.

What damage has been done for driving at "3" for 5 months and 5000 KM / 3000 miles.

Probably nothing. You just burned a crap load of fuel...

Now have you read the user manual for your car yet...?

I'm sure you're fine, you just got shitty gas mileage.

I did my whole test drive in 3 (accidentally) and then the dealer realized and said it was just for when you need a little more power like passing someone or going up a hill.

Well I did read the manual when I got it but it doesn't go into detail on the 3 and drive position. This is my first car with the 3 and D on the same level, so I thought they were the same, it also feels better to lock the shift on the left instead of leaving it on the right. Have to get into the habit of leaving it on D since I am used to the 3 position for so long.

I was wondering why my gas milage was so bad, I was going to go back to dealership to ask have to see how it is now in the next couple of weeks.

driving in 3 doesn't hurt anything just burn gas like others have stated. In the manual it says when driven in 3 its the same as driving without overdrive. Hence thats why we don't have an overdrive on-off button.

With it on 3, you just never shifted into 4th gear. You didn't damage anything.

I did the same thing.... for about 2 miles on the interstate leaving the dealership until I realized that it needed to be in D. After about a mile, it seemed to me that the rpms were awfully high for only going 60 MPH. I then noticed it said 3 on the dash and then tried pushing the stick over and it promptly shifted to 4th gear and the rpms dropped.

3 in my case is better for city driving since the shift pattern of the transmission seems to change. (shifting at Higher RPM) and compress more while realeasing accelarator wich is good in stop and go situation. I drove for 50 minutes the other day city and highway just for fun, this won't hurt anything except your gas milage.
